Fraser Island Tuesday 3rd May 2016
Today was another perfect day. But the day started last night (after I posted last nights blog). With so many flying bugs around our nightly ritual is to keep the light away from our bedding camps. Paul's camp is on his roof and mine is as well. He is constantly telling the children to keep the torches off as they get into the camp as it attracts the mossies and other creatures. Well same ritual last night as we were all going into bed and once all the lights went out Paul suddenly screamed. At first we thought something was wrong but we soon found out that Lisa had bought him glow in the dark undies. He said he was blinded by his own jocks and that he was a glowing light globe for all of the bugs. I have not laughed so much in all my life. It was so so funny to hear him complaining to Lisa as to why the hell would you buy me glowing undies. We couldn't talk as we were crying with laughter. Last night was dry again, no rain. We have not seen rain for 36 hours

Everything you see in this picture will be under water at high tide. now. About time the weather changed. We headed to the local shop and bought the obligatory coffee, ice cream, bread and crackers. We headed off to Wathumba creek to check out the beach. It was only 15 km away but it was on a windy and very bumpy track. Took a little longer at 30 km an hour. We bumped into a couple from the Gold Coast at the shop and they had an 8 year old and they tagged along. Olivia and her daughter got along famously. We had particularly gone to this secluded place on the Western side of the Island as we thought we would see dingoes. We got to the site and there was one person fishing and he had caught good sized flatheads and also a shark ray. He saw dingoes on the way in but we didn't. Didn't catch any fish, the tide was out and was good to swim in an inland section. We had lunch there. On the way out the impossible happened we SAW two dingoes. They were walking along the side of the track. Very casual. Paul screamed on the Short band radio. While we were having lunch at Wathumba

Low tide with lots of soldier crab holes. I am talking thousands of them just walking the beach together. we were attacked by midgies. Midgies are minute two winged flies that live in mangrove and we were surrounded by mangroves. The flies were so small we could not even see them. We saw the results of the bites with red marks. This is the only place we have encountered them on this trip. We found out later from one of the locals that this beach was famous for its midgies and that is why no one goes there. I wish they could have told us before we went. Karen would have loved it here (not). After lunch we headed back to Orchid Beach and then to a small lake called Ocean Lake. Apparently you are likely to see dingoes at this lake. Well all we saw were people trying to start a barbecue. No dingoes. We also found out that this lake harbours a resident crocodile. Now this would have been good to know BEFORE we waded in the dark waters. On the way to Ocean Lake we bumped into about 10 very large Pelikans just lazing on the beach. Didn't get a chance to take a photo as Paul was driving like a maniac and I had to

All of the little holes are individual solder crab holes. It is bizarre to walk over them keep up to him. The tide was coming in and if we stayed too long we could get isolated from our Camp. I found out that there is a night carpet snake on the island which is non venomous, in addition to the venemous ones and this must have been the snake that Karen had seen the night before. Let me tell you we were a little careful walking around at night after that little episode. One of the regular campers in our compound (the ones we helped yesterday) gave us a pippy picker. This is just a 50mm pipe with a sharp end. We will try and dig out pippies from the sand tomorrow. We finished the day fishing off Waddy Point rocks it was the best finish to the day.
