Especially when you are visiting a country for the first time, packing everything you (may) want to see into shorter periods is a true challenge. So, what do you do when the place you are about to visit is as big, diverse, and colorful as
Australia ? Here are a couple of tips that could help you solve this riddle.
Determine what you are interested in
First, it’s good to decide what parts of Australia you’re interested in: its islands and beaches, nature and national parks, cities or rural towns, or you are rather up for a gastro-adventure and prefer going on food and wine tours. Or all of the abovementioned things. This will tell you what you need to focus on when creating an itinerary or a rough plan for your trip. Naturally, these will also depend on who you’re travelling with. For example, if you’re going with your spouse and children, you need to include something that will keep them excited and entertained as well.
Keep your plans within your abilities
Don’t overdo it with the planned activities. Bear in mind that every destination requires time to be truly enjoyed, so sort out your priorities
before you get on the plane. Otherwise, you simply won’t be able to see all your mind is set on regardless of how badly you want to, and you’ll keep rushing to a different place without being able to fully relax and soak in the moment.
Visiting Australia’s cities and towns
The country’s urban life is extremely rich, with amazing places like Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and so on. If you intend to dedicate your entire stay to cities, their landmarks and surroundings, you can save quite a bit of time travelling from one city to another by plane, instead of spending hours in a car.
When in Sydney, make sure you visit the
Sydney Opera House , Sydney Harbor Bridge, Sydney Tower and take a walk along the famous Circular Quay. Melbourne has a lot to be proud of as well: don’t skip the breathtaking Flinders Street Railway Station, Federation Square, or the National Gallery of Victoria. Melbourne is also adorned by the beautiful Yarra River. If you’re interested in this city’s surroundings, you can pay a visit to a charming little town called Timboon. It takes about two and a half hours by car to get to this
town, well known for its gorgeous flora and fauna reserve, excellent cheese and wine, a whisky distillery, etc. If you’re with your kids, don’t fail to ask the locals to direct you to their
best ice cream store for a special treat, as Timboon is also famous for its delicious, high-quality ice cream.
Visiting Australia’s beaches
You’re craving a memorable experience on a
fantastic beach ? Then bear in mind these Australian gems: Whitehaven Beach, Wineglass Bay and Main Beach in Queensland.
Whitehaven Beach, located on Whitsunday Island, is recognizable for its powder-fine white sand, crystal-clear water and movie-worthy scenery. A place so beautiful it borders on the unreal. The second beach, Wineglass Bay, is located in Tasmania and is loved by so many for its spectacular landscapes. It is a truly exciting place, as it offers a wide range of activities, such as kayaking or wildlife spotting. Last but not least, comes Noosa Main Beach, which, just like the previous ones, certainly doesn’t lack beauty and is also popular because of its calm, clear waters that allow one to enjoy swimming to the fullest.
National Parks
In case instead of the excitement of the big city you’ve turned
to the joys of nature, then you absolutely want to include one of the following parks in your trip schedule. The Freycinet National Park, Tasmania, is perhaps the most famous Australian national park. Its serene beaches, distinct pink granite peaks, rich fauna and beautiful greenery attract tourists from around the globe. The second is the
Murramarang National Park , included here because it is a particularly convenient location for those who are visiting Sydney, as it is located about 200 kilometres from the city. If apart from unique beaches, you’re also hoping to see kangaroos on your trip, this is the place to go—a particularly attractive and amusing destination for children. Lastly, another park convenient for Sydney fans is the
Royal National Park , about an hour away. After Yellowstone, this is the oldest national park in the world, a place where you can enjoy whale-watching, swimming, mountain-biking, coastal walks, bird-watching, picnics, and so on.
Needless to say, this list contains only a tiny fragment of Australia’s natural, urban, and historic treasures, and presents a humble basis you can build upon with your own ideas.
