New Norcia New Norcia - Dawn Atwell Reserve, Julimar - Castle Rock, Porongurup Quite a few people we have met on this trip have recommended a visit to New Norcia. I am not a religious person but I enjoy history and love old architecture. We did the town tour and I did enjoy the stories and the buildings, but it wasn't something that I would rave about (just not really my cup-of-tea - others in the tour loved it). Poor Kevin just came along for me...
New Norcia is a Benedictine monastry, which means that it must be self-sufficient. The first Abbot was a missionary - he set up the farms and the aboriginal schools etc. He recruited monks with special talents. The second Abbot was not really interested in mission work and was more focussed on building - he built the girls college, and then the boys college, although he did continue with the aboriginal schools. The third Abbot was the money man who had to try and maintain the buildings etc during times of war and depression. I won't go into any more detail - if you are interested just Google it.

New Norcia - hotel return to Toodyay and noticed a few different wildflowers. We stopped at the Dawn Atwell Reserve at Julimar to have a better look at the flowers.
The next morning we headed off to Porongurup and arrived in time to setup camp and do the Castle Rock Sky walk. The walk was pretty tiring - 2.2km up hill with a 200m scramble over rocks and a ladder to climb to the top of the sky walk. It was worth the effort though for the stunning views. They say a picture is worth a thousand words - so see my essay below 😊
After the walk we went for ice-cream (we deserved it) back at Porongurup shop before heading back to camp... Tomorrow we head east to an overnight stop between Hyden and Norseman before starting on the Nullarbor the next day.
