When we landed what was the first thing we did? We went for a $12 pint. I couldnt believe my eyes, $12! People had told me Australia was expensive but apparently I wasn't prepared. I pulled myself together, took into account the exchange rate, and realised that it was only about £6.50, which is still an expensive pint, however I would pay that in some craft beer places at home so I didn't cry about it. It was actually a really nice pint. Where would our adventure take us? What would we be doing over the next year? What does Australia hold? These were the questions we asked ourselves.
As expected, the first few days we were sorting out all the boring stuff out like bank cards, tax file numbers, phones etc. this was, of course as well as drinking lots of goon and mingling with the other folk in the hostel. The jet lag was insane, my body clock didn't adjust for days and I felt like I could sleep forever. We made pals pretty quick, and from then we took it on our ourselves to explore Perth and some of the surrounding areas before we started looking for
work. We walked along the Swan River to Henessey island where we were lucky enough to encounter 6 Kangeroos. On approach, I was intimidated. I like animals, but I am a wimp so seeing 6 wild animals that i'm not familiar with put me on edge. But I took a cup of man the f**k up and we took lots of pictures and of course selfies with them. I was amazed how friendly they were regardless of all the tourists around them. In my opinion it came across as a little overwhelming, but they seemed to enjoy the company. We met a nice man there who was sat in the grass reading a book to one of the kangeroos. He told us that over the months he'd been going to this particular spot to read books to them. He had got to know them and he knew what they feeling, which was nice.
Coincidentally, that night we cooked kangeroo burgers on the bbq. This was our first kangeroo experience and I am sad to say, they tasted great. We had bbq'd corn of the cobs, salad, beers, and of course, banter.
We have also visited Fremantle on 2 occasions.
The first by train, just me and James. We obviously visited the Little Creatures Brewery. This is an amazing place and I would advise anyone to go even if you aren't a beer lover. We went to a brew pub called 'Monk', which brews the beer in the back of the building. Some of the beers were delicious. It was tempting to stay there all day but it was mid afternoon and daytime drinking would not have ended well. The people of Freo were lovely, and the town itself was so clean and homey. The place we went for lunch however was supposed to be 'happy hour', but the lack of smiling and overall mood of the waitress was anything but happy. We walked on the beach, stayed there until sunset and then finally got the train back to Perth.
The second time our friend Ray drove us with Hannah and Kody. We drove along Canning Highway, the road that ACDC sing about in 'Highway To Hell'. I thought this was pretty cool. When we arrived, we wondered around the Freo markets looking at all the different stalls. I bought cheap fruit, introduced Ray to Baclava, ate beef jerky,
tried spicy sauce on a strange potato pakora, and saw a man throw a boomerang that instantly came back to him like he was God. I love baclava and I love Freo. On the way home we drove via Cottosloe beach, one of the most beautiful beaches on the West Coast. We took selfies on James' go pro and had a paddle in the sea.
Another night a big group of us walked to Kings Park. We went on the evening as we had been told the view was spectacular, and it did not disappoint. After about 50 minutes of walking we reached the top of the hill to the view point and the sight was unbelievable. We could see for miles, the entire Perth skyline, the Swan River, the hundreds of cars going in and out of the city. The sky was so beautifully illuminated we stayed there for a while admiring the view.
To conclude, we have drank endless amounts of goon and beer by the pool, been bitten by insects more than ever before, made pals from all over the world, tried new food, changed bedrooms 3 times, and experienced scorching temperatures change swiftly to
