Day 13
It didn’t rain at night. It is one of few dry nights we had. Linda said that there were big roos roaming the whole camp ground during the night. We decided to take another off road diversion to see another campsite in the D’Entrecasteaux NP. We headed towards Warren Beach which is NW of Windy Harbour. We let our tyres down again at the first sign post that said to drop to 20psi and we saw another sign post later that said to drop to 10psi, but we kept our pressures at 25psi. This was a mistake. The road in initially was great. We were driving on 4H through narrow sandy areas. We saw a few camps set up along the way and a camper trailer but pressed on. I was leading at the time and just about 1km from Warren Beach the track did a sharp right turn on very soft sand. As I entered the bend I knew I was going to in trouble. Being such a sharp turn I couldn’t get any momentum and got my car and camper stuck. It was the reason why the other camper left his trailer behind. Praise the Lord for
us is that right at this spot was a vacant camp ground which allows my Patrol room to move to get the camper out. Well I been wanting to use my Maxtraxx and now I got the opportunity. We unhitched the camper and using Maxtraxx twice my Patrol got out. I then had to pull my camper out. I got my hilift jack out and Andre lifted the camper’s drawbar so that we can rehitch. The Lord provided some bricks at this remote camp which allows us to place under the hilift as the sand is too soft. We used Fiama wheel chocks to place under the camper’s jockey which has taken a battering. Praise the Lord we were able to rehitch and parked the camper on solid ground. We then unhitch again so we can continue on this track. Initially I said I was going to continue and asked Andre & Linda to continue on, but Linda was most insistent that we all go together to see the end of this track. Well I am glad we did continue because just around the corner were giant sand dunes before the beach. What a ride to go down these high
dunes. Warren beach is very long. As far as our eye can see its all beach. We did see another car on the beach at a distance and Andre decided to go chat with them. I then had a bit of problem getting my 4WD transmission to go from 4L to 4H. A quick prayer and amazingly the car went back into gear. We now have to get back up these giant sand dunes. I got stuck halfway up. I dropped my pressure to 15-12psi and the Patrol climbed all the way up. A Mitsubishi German driver overtook Andre up the hill and stopped to have a chat with me. It turns out that he was our camping neighbour the night before and commented about how great our chorus singing had been. This is his 3rd time at this spot. Andre had problem at the same halfway spot. His Ford bottom kept dragging on the sand. It took him a good 30mins to climb the dune. Then Linda gave the excuse that I chose the wrong dune blah blah blah excuses excuses :P. It was a dune we needed to conquer and we did nuff said :D. Went back to
Sand Dunes
Tough climb rehitch the camper and start our way out. We have really spent a good day 4W driving and now too late to climb the tree at Pemberton. In fact our plan was to camp at Conto camp ground this evening towards Margaret River which is about 170kms away. We were tired and its late so we decided to camp somewhere closer along the road before dark about 70kms East of Pemberton. On our maps it’s the same camp spot the Diletosso camped at last year. A quick fuel up at Pemberton and headed to this rest stop. We stopped at farm to pick up some cheap Fuji apples and Tamarillos. When we got to the it says NO CAMPING to our dismay. It’s now dark. So we kept heading along the road hoping to find a rest stop. Before long we found that we already so close to Conto camp ground along Cave Road so we decided to stay there. It was dark but we manage to get some lovely camp spots. The ranger was there and was very helpful in helping us. So far WA people are very helpful and hospitable in our experience. The only negative thing is that my camp spot had fish carcasses lying around the camp fire. I tried starting a fire to kill the smell but the wood is too green. It was an exciting day but very tiring to we slept straight away.
