Friday 10th June. Today was the start of a long trek which would eventually take us to an area of Australia we have never been to before – Karijini. Our destination on the second day of the trek would be Tom Price – the best part of 700 kilometers away from Exmouth. Graham had contemplated doing it all in one day, as Sarah and Darryl had done in the opposite direction on their tour. But we’re not very good at very early starts – we often wake up to find some neighbours have already gone but we obviously aren’t that well organized. Anyway, we like to have a reasonably leisurely breakfast and to take our time while travelling. Even if we could maintain 100 kilometers per hour (without breaks we average 80) it would involve 7 ... read more

Day 176 - Karijini National Park to Tom Price We slept really well last night, must be all the fresh air! It’s another bright and beautiful morning here in Karijini National Park and with no ceremonies to stand on we’re away from camp just after 7am. There’s just one more gorge, Hamersley, that we’d like to visit but it’s at the opposite end of the park to where we are and seemingly it’s easier to reach it from Tom Price rather than from here. The road is pretty quiet this morning, not much wildlife or other traffic to speak of. Only the warning sign of the 8% climb gets our attention, we haven’t done one of those in a while but we know PIE will handle it easily. Our initial stop in Tom Price is at ... read more

As we left Exmouth on our way to Tom Price we had 2 roads to choose from a 1. which was gravel and the other a main road and the diff being that the gravel road was about 50km shorterbut it had also been raining all night and day which made the roads very slippery and wet!!! So we went up this gravel road thinking its worth taking a look and after about 5km's we turned around after "snaking" it all the way up the road without even trying!!! I have added a couple of pics to show what our car and caravan looked like just after 5km in the slosh!!! Oh and we hit our first roo on the same stretch at about 9:20 in the morning, lucky it was just a small 1 or ... read more

DAY 191 It felt like a hard start to the day, I struggled to get out of bed, but that maybe because we had a late night last night. Andy as always got the kettle on, at 7.30 I managed to surface. For some reason I feel quite out of sync with the routine of packing the trailer up, but we get done in reasonable time, we drive down to Kirsty and Andrew who are almost ready, but we find that they are flushing out the water tank, it seems that in Coral Bay they picked up an infestation of ants, they had not only eaten their way through some cable they have managed to get into the water tank. A cup of tea with ants floating in it is not really funny, I suppose a ... read more

DAY 190 It had turned out to be quite a warm night; I woke up and opened the inner window flaps to let some cooler air into the tent. We had a little rain last night and it was still cloudy so of course the night was going to be quite warm. We were awake early, Andy was fidgeting so I knew that something was on his mind and he was not going to be satisfied until he could get on and do what he needed to do and that was to change the wheel in order to get ourselves mobile and sort out some new tyres. Before I knew it a cup of tea was being brought in to me, but I could not sit in bed and drink it, I had things to do ... read more

Alright so today was day 6. And for those of us who had mattress set 6 and were in cabin 6, it was a day not to be forgotten. Athena had been complaining for a couple of days of bad stomach cramps, but she been trying to ignore them. However, they got really bad while at our sheep station, so she told Kim. He was afraid it might be appendicitis, so he suggested we stop in the town of Tom Price to have her checked out at the hospital. Of course the bad luck must come to both the 666 tentmates, so that morning while getting dressed, something flew into my eye. Something big, and painful. I tried eye drops. I even tried standing in the shower with the water running through my eye. Nothing ... read more

Sunday May 28th and we leave Coral Bay with Bruno, Irene, Liz and David, all from Coffs Harbour, waving farewell. Our next destination is Tom Price and we drive through magnificent country during the day. Scenery changed from semi arid to beautiful green and red dirt and hills and big rocky outcrops. Just what we were waiting to see in the Pilbara. Came across plenty of cattle today including a few rather large bulls. John’s diary says they would each feed an army! The wildflowers are starting to appear and with the blue sky and the red dirt and rocks it was a lovely drive. Had to stop overnight so had our first night free camping at Beasley River. Tom and Val from Singleton were already there and shortly after our arrival Wayne and Jill from ... read more
