Day 57 – Saturday 25
th August – Perth
Karrinyup Caravan park in the northern suburbs of Perth had been identified as the best located park for us to camp in the city tonight as it was the closest to Rory’s house in Wembley. We had arranged to go to Rory’s at 4pm so had several hours to explore Perth. It is Mark’s and the kids’ first time here. The caravan park let us set up the tent at 10.30am so we wouldn’t have to pull the trailer all round Perth and struggle for parking. It was a beautiful winter’s morning in Perth and our first stop was Scarborough beach for a bit of a walk and a coffee. Shorts and t-shirt weather and glorious blue skies. The suburb was bursting with life – people out walking, running and cycling along the sea front, surfers bobbing in the waves and people generally enjoying the warm weather.
From Scarborough we drove along the coastal road south to Fremantle for a spot of lunch and some pale ale and cider at the famous Little Creatures brewery at Fremantle harbour. We treated ourselves to a bowl of chips with garlic
mussels and a margherita pizza as we looked out at the small boats coming and going across the docklands. After lunch, wandering around Fremantle we discovered the maritime museum of ship wrecks, with a special exhibition on the Batavia. They had a spectacular range of salvaged items from a host of seventeenth to nineteenth century wrecks, from a portion of the hull of the Batavia, to silver coins, remains of glass goblets, bullets, cannonballs, cannons and other weapons, ivory buttons, pipes and the list goes on. Excerpts from the ships’ logs and seamen’s diaries were displayed for the visitor to imagine life at sea on the trading voyages from Europe to Java (then called Batavia). Another brilliant museum well worth visiting.
For our first visit to a proper house for 8 weeks we thought it appropriate to have a shower before turning up at Rory’s house. Even if we had no clean clothes to wear we could at least try to get our skin to smell nice and wash our hair! So we went back to the caravan park for a quick shower before getting to Rory’s at 4pm.
We had a lovely evening with Linda, Rox, Rory,
Campbell, Eloise and their cousin. It’s been at least a year since Luke last saw Rory when they came to Melbourne during the holidays so they had a lot to catch up on. The West Coast Eagles beat Collingwood at the Subiaco stadium just a couple of kms from Rory’s house. We could hear the noise of the crowd in the stadium from their back garden while we were watching the match on the TV. At 10pm it was time for Anna, Mark and I to head back to the caravan park and leave Luke for his sleepover with Rory. We will pick him up tomorrow morning at Rory’s football game. If we remember!
