Ahhhh Men at Work. Classy.
With a long leap across the Indian Ocean we find ourselves in Western Australia for our first taste of some real jet lag. Neither of us are particularly used to having trouble sleeping, so this was a bit of a shock to the system. Thankfully it was eased by Marissa's cousin Jason's XBox (to occupy late nights) and his gourmet expresso maker (to ease in the following morning). Yes, Perth is home to yet more of Marissa's extended family. Not that I'm complaining ... yet again we have been looked after incredibly well. Cousins Jason and Terrence and wives Jules and Debs fed, watered and sheltered us as well as taking us on guided tours around the city and providing some much needed air conditioning during the heat wave we had landed in (it was over 40 for much of the week!). Thanks so much guys your hospitality really made our stay!
The family didn't stop there though. One afternoon we popped in for coffee with another relative only to find another 15
We're a long way from home
14,000 kms and counting ... or so members of the Wolman family all welcoming us with open arms (and giving us a lift to the supermarket). It's a behemoth I tells ya.
We spend a great few days wandering around Perth and neighbouring Fremantle, or Freo to the locals. We also had time for one excursion so drove south for couple of days in Margaret River. This is towards the most south westerly tip of Oz and famous for its wine and it surfing. Now we've been in trouble here before, so thought it was best to stick to something we can both do without damaging ourselves (physically at least) and that is taste wine. We booked ourselves on a day trip of 5 vineyards (hic), and a cheese and chocolate factory run by a crew called bushtucker tours - the deal being that lunch was a meal of Aussie bushtucker. So the 15 of us sat down to a starter plate featuring a piece of bread and 6 or so bush delicacies neatly arranged around the plate. Our guide for the day, Silvano, introduced each
Witchetty Grub
I was the only lucky person of 15 diners to be treated to this this delight hiding under my bread! one to us and explained what we were eating and if necessary how to eat it. These included dried bush tomatoes, marinated hibiscus flower hearts and some weird olive type fruit ... all pretty good. Then for the last morsel we were all asked to pick up our bread. Across the table from me Marissa lets out a gasp and shriek as she discovers she has won the lucky dip of the day. Under her bread was a 5cm long fat and juicy witchetty grub and with it the challenge for her to eat it. This caused a bit of an uproar from the rest of the group, but Silvano had picked the right plate to booby trap and it was eaten with no complaints. In fact is was pretty tasty ... kind of like a rich nut pate. A nice bottle of local white was earned out of it too.
This Weeks Likes: *Aussie breaking news. One program was interrupted with the headline "It's getting so hot, the bananas are falling off the trees!"
*Aussie beer - it seems they send all the crap over to the UK and keep the good stuff for themselves
*A
lovely unexpected dinner with the Mummy and Daddy Woolmer. Susie's parents happened to be in Perth at the end of their Oz tour.
This Weeks Dislikes:
- 42 Deg heat. Now I know it has been cold back home and we shouldn't really be complaining - but heat like this is just too much when you are trying to sightsee
- Still awake at 5am? Not even Tiger Woods Golf can help? ... ahhh Jet lag
- Up at 9 the next morning to make the most of your few days in this city ... surely we would be tired the next evening? Sadly not ...
God is watching over us So first it was Tony and now the almighty himself is leaving us comments. Fingers are still pointing at the JB ... any information on this mystery poster would still be appreciated
