We are nearing the end of 2009 and our 2nd full year in Australia. Sorry the blogs have become few and far between but life has become pretty normal over here and we have our routines down to a fine art! Our 3rd Australian Christmas was a really quiet one. Still doesn't feel like Christmas should and I don't think it ever will. I feel like we bypassed Christmas totally this year and just didn't get into the spirit of it at all but hoping that next year will be different as we have family coming over to celebrate with us! Butler is fast becoming civilised (yay!!!) and we nearly have a completed beach at Jindalee. The pub 'The Cornerstone' opened in style at the end of November. It's a very english pub and has a ... read more

Week one of sunny Australia complete! I have had an awesome time in Perth and the weather has been perfect. We have been staying with my God mother and her family in Mullaloo and they have looked after us so well! We arrived in the early hours of last Thursday morning so after a big lie in we headed down the coast road to see the beaches and the town. We stocked up on some food and then went to the local for a sundown (a beer as the sun goes down - incredibly logical and incredibly good). Day 2 was all about the party and we were taken for a night out in Perth and despite being a little on the expensive side (compared to what we have been used to) it was great fun. ... read more

I just left the Farm, where I have found more inspiration for "rtw43" and new very interesting subjects to think and write about. My camcorder and camera were working almost non stop. My aim was to be the guest there for only a day or two, but finally I have spent nearly three weeks on the farm doing the things I have never done before in my life. I was joining the new each day as I was gaining the new experience. The new clear view on today.s denial world substructure and nature. After what I've learned on the Farm I was ready to continue my journey I left the city life behind. After I have met fantastic, hard working family with big passion for Australian lifestyle. Very friendly, life experienced married couple with a ... read more

It was a long flight indeed. Another new world showed up in front of my eyes. Every single detail on every single corner was new to me. Air, wind, the light, sun... time. Yeah, time. This one gave me huge head brick punch. What time is it? Can I go sleep now? Time zone is hollow beast out here and it hosted more travellers than tsunami in human history. So what is the first step I should do now? Ok. Just like in the plan. Hostel. Find a hostel. I mean... go to the one you found (I thought) on the internet couple of days before. I had three options. Fremantle and Perth city plus the beach. Each hostel prices varies between 20 and 28 bucks. When I was doing the Hostel research I found that ... read more

Well, we are well and truly into Winter now and boy have we been cold! We've had bad storms and really heavy rain and I think because this year we are living closer to the coast - we seem to have been hit even more with the bad weather. There was one particularly bad storm one night with heavy rain and thunder and gale force winds that we thought the roof was going to cave in - we have a steel colorbond roof so it makes the noise of the rain and wind even louder - sort of like camping indoors ;0) One weekend we gave in trying to ‘get dressed’ for bed which included thick pjs, socks, and a hoody top and went out a bought an electric blanket - bliss!!! We also put 2 ... read more

Our flight from Singapore to Oz was uneventful apart from us having hysterics whilst watching the “Top Gear Vietnam Special”. You know when someone has headphones on and is laughing whilst the rest of the plane is quiet? Yes, that was us!! Having done the Top gear trip in reverse order on our travels we just couldn’t stop laughing at some of the situations that they managed to get themselves into...many of them similar to situations that we had been through! (It’s well worth watching if you have not seen it, if only to see the stunning Vietnam scenery shown) On arriving at Perth airport and waiting for our rucksacks to come off the conveyor belt I’m aware that one of the sniffer dogs is frantically sniffing Johns daypack. We know that they are REALLY strict ... read more

While travelling through Africa I became increasingly curious how far we had travelled. Using Google Earth I roughly worked out the distance to be a staggering 47,500 km, roughly a 50:50 split between air and land. Many Individual journeys stood out: 630 arduous kilometers by train from Roma to Innsbruck, a nightmare as we were woken up every 30 minutes to have our tickets checked; 350km through the jungle from Kota Bharu to Jerantut taking nearly 12 hours, 4 hours longer than expected! The Overland journey from Dar E Salaam to Nairobi was around 2,400km a mere 500km more than travelling along the coast from Cape Town to Durban (1,990km). The road quality played a big part in distances covered in a day; the 480 km between Lusaka to Livingstone was certainly painfully slow, but, I ... read more
