We had a little visitor before we left Bunbury
7th Jan 2011

Happy New Year to all.

Well, we’ve been at Big Valley Caravan Park, Margaret River, for nearly three weeks now. It is a working sheep farm and we are camped in a paddock overlooking a lovely valley to the west. Of course there are plenty of sheep to talk to if we get bored??

We went on a full day winery/brewery tour in the first week we were here. We met some people from Texas, Canada and England on the bus. Needless to say, the fluid went down well and I have to admit, I had to ask Rose to remind me which vineyards we had visited the next day?? We’ve also had a drive down to Virginia and visited Jewel Cave on the way.

As expected, this area is very popular with Perth families and they have descended on the town in droves. Hopefully things will start to quieten down in the next week or so and we can move on to the south coast.

We had a very quiet Xmas and New Years Eve. Rose made a good effort for Xmas lunch, with a nice piece of pork followed by Xmas

pud and brandy custard (thanks to Ray and Val). The farmer put on a bit of a BBQ on Xmas night, which was good fun but we were in bed by 10.00pm on NYE. It felt strange with the family spread so widely. Pete and Laura were in NZ for Xmas.

The weather has been just right down here, unlike poor Queensland. Fortunately, there haven’t been any major problems on the Gold Coast.

We’ve made a couple of trips to Busselton to get supplies from Woollies and visited the towns of Dunsborough and Yallingup on the way back.

There is a town close by named Cowamarup, which has a statue of a gold cow on a tall pole in its main park. Close by is a vineyard, owned by a very wealthy person, where there is a gold statue of a lady in a similar pose on a pole in the middle of a lake. The story goes, that the very wealthy vineyard owner asked the council for a permit to erect the statue of his wife for her 50th birthday, but was knocked back! He told the council that he would fight them through the courts

Rose gets all the good jobs. Clearing sheep poo before putting the matting down??
until he won the battle. Rather than waste resident’s money, the council reluctantly granted the permit.A while later, the town of Cowaramup was chosen to host an international celebration of the cow, where statues of cows are decorated and placed around towns all over the world. Obviously, Cowaramup council saw this as the perfect opportunity to get back at the vineyard owner, and had the cow statue erected! Funny story aye?

Looking forward to the next entry???

Happy New Year!
Hello both, Happy New Year to you as well. We were in bed at 11pm as well, Leanne woke us up at 12.03 to wish us happy new year. It was good to speak to you the other day. It sounds awful that weather they're having in Queensland, bet you're glad you're away from it. Love the pictures, especially the story and pictures of the the statues of the cow and woman, lol. Well take care, love you lots. Speak soon Pat & Dave xxxx

Chick on a Stick !
Hi John and Rose Loved hearing how much you enjoyed your stay in the region and at Big Valley. To follow on from your story in Cowaramup of the cow and the vineyard of the lady, they have both been nicknamed. The lady is "Chick On A Stick" and the cow "Roast On A Post" in good old Aussie humour. On Big Valley if anyone is thinking of visiting I too can highly recommend it. You will find lots more pictures, a video of the site and a review by visiting The Margaret River Guide (margaretrivertguide.com.au) and looking under reviews or caravan parks. Kevin, Shelly and Kylie are great hosts and I hear their Christmas roast is lovely. Good luck with the rest of your trip John and Rose, all the best for 2011.

Hi Thanks for the extra info. I'm sure it will bring a chuckle to some of our unfortunate friends in Queensland.

Tassie
Hi Jude Not sure when, or if we will make Tassie. Will let you know. Our schedule has been disrupted by the lack of camps during the school holidays. The weather across the country is also a major factor. Love John & Rose

Up Town
Hi Stephen As was the case all through our Europe trip in 08, where all of the icons had scaffolding around them, Busseton Jetty was closed for some reason! Frustrating. Keep your mind above your waist????? John & Rose

It's not me it's WA
WA has all these Up names....Bummer pity about the pier - considering it is all wood though guess they are worried about it rotting - after all, at (what is it?) over a mile long it would be a bloody long swim back if you couldn't walk it.... Oh well. Now you can look forward to one of those tree top walks as you come around the south coast of WA - and no jumping off the SW corner of Australia.....
