OWL
We had a visitor the other night. This owl sat on Leckies awning prop. Jane came out the van door - only a few feet away and it did not move. 1st July We left the beautiful Lake Argyle around 9-am and arrived in Kununurra about an hour later - too early to check into the caravan park.
We were able to register but couldn’t move in until 11-am.
The boys checked out our allocated sites and worked out a plan of attack to park the vans in this really nice park.
A lot of people had queued up by now and this seems to happen most days especially at this time of year. You really do need to book ahead. We are so glad we have done that, especially in the popular places. We set up in short time - we are getting pretty good at this now and are a lot quicker at packing up and setting up.
Kununurra is quite a nice little place, but I find these places are spoiled a bit by the locals hanging around the streets - lolling about everywhere.
Being Sunday most places were closed including the tourist attractions so we had a fairly quiet day just chilling out.
Monday we decided to go out to the Ord Valley for a
BOAB
Magnificent Boab Tree surrounded by travellers. look at the Sandalwood shop and the Hoochery, which is a Rum distillery. We had some morning tea at the Sandalwood shop nothing impressed us there very much except maybe the coffee and cake.
We continued on to the stone craft shop where Alan bought a piece of stone shaped round with slots in it for holding letters, it’s an unfinished piece so he wants to polish it himself.
We called into a metal art shop that had a lot of really lovely pieces, lots of boab trees in particular. Gee are these boab trees amazing up here. The ones that grow in Qld are quite neat looking trees but these ones up here are very unruly and really spectacular.
We then headed off to the other side of town to the zebra rock shop. We spent quite a bit of time there. The Hartners and Lecks bought a few pieces and we had lunch there and enjoyed a corned beef and pickle sandwich, a mango smoothie, and some mango cheesecake which was delicious. About the cheapest lunch we have had since we have been on the road. We continued on to the next place that sold
BOAB up close
We could probably just hold hands around this tree. fresh produce got tomatoes, lettuce, grapefruit, cabbage and bananas.
Jim and I went did some much needed grocery shopping. We didn’t arrive back to the van until after five and just on dark.
We have all caught up on our washing and cleaning while here and Jim and I have been busy with the blog and finally worked out how to attach the photos and videos, it makes such a difference having the photos on the blog.
Tuesday we all did our own thing in the morning Jane got a haircut which looks good and we did a bit more shopping. The guys got some XXXX Gold that was on special on Monday, Jim bought two cartons but we had to buy one carton each. The laws on buying grog up here are very restricted (I wanted a carton of cruisers but I couldn’t buy them until the next day after 2-pm).
Around 12-30pm we all went back out to the Hoochery for lunch had Barra again. I’ve had better, it’s quite disappointing the Barra certainly is not as good as it used to be up here - will have to go back to Georges at Sanctuary Cove for some decent Barra I think.
Got my carton of grog on our way back did a bit more shopping and came home. The best Barra we have had so far was at the Daley Waters Hotel.
Still on food and the prices of it up here, don’t know how the grey nomads can afford to go out for a meal here, Jane paid $40 for 2 hamburgers and chips at Lake Argyle, and they said they were disgusting. The price of a 1 litre bottle of trim milk is $4. The Hartners paid $13 for two cups of coffee at a local coffee shop. Jane said that was outrageous I wouldn’t have paid that. We all had a laugh about that especially after the hamburgers. Well, here I am again, it’s 3-55am must go back to bed try get some more sleep. Today is the 4
th of July our wedding anniversary - 42 years. We have booked into a local restaurant for dinner tonight and we’ll keep our fingers crossed for a nice meal and a Queensland win in State of Origin. Go Queensland.
