We were up really early again to get on the road. We had a long drive ahead of us. We left Exmouth at 6:30am and we arrived in the mining town of Tom Price just after lunch time. We ate our lunch in the park and then stocked up on any supplies we needed. In the afternoon we drove the one and a half hours into Karijini National Park. We were staying at the eco retreat out there which has all solar powered heating for the showers and eco tents with bunk beds in them. Is a really cool place to stay in the middle of no where haha. We all got changed and headed down to Joffre gorge which was right behind the tents we were staying at. Took us only a few minutes to ... read more

Cape Range to Karijini The coastal winds have been picking up the past few nights, so we decided to move on to a more central Western Australian location. We started our drive into town at Exmouth early, fuelling up at Caltex – 91.2L @ 182.8c/L. From here, it was a long drive with many cattle roadkill, one every seventy kilometres or so! The road trains don’t even seem to break for upcoming herds of cattle. After getting more fuel at Paraburdoo (just enough to get us to Tom Price) – 9.1L @ 164.9c/L, we drove on towards a supermarket and yet another visitor centre to get some more maps and local knowledge on Karijini National Park. Fuelled up all our tanks at Shell (Tom Price) – 95.2L @164.9c/L and headed into the National Park to ... read more

Here we are then at Karijini National Park, via a free overnight stay north of Port Hedland, a damp overnight at Auski Roadhouse and 2 nights too many in Port Hedland, sorry guys this place is the pits, well to be accurate, mountains. Mountains of iron ore, rock salt and many other minerals are piled high ready for loading at the docks, where at any one time there can be up to 25 container ships awaiting to receive their cargo. BHP Billiton alone ships 100 million tonnes of iron ore per year, with 300 million tonnes being the target in the coming years. At an average of $40 per tonne, not bad! Anyway, what happened on Saturday 11th as we set off from Port Hedland to Auski Roadhouse? Two things, it rained and rained, and we ... read more

THE WEST COAST Monday 31 May - Coral Bay to Karijini We left at 8am for the long drive to the Karijini National Park. It was a bit of a mission to leave as I lost my room key and the battery on the bus went flat. Luckily, I found my room key (John reminded me I'd taken it with me to the shower the day before, and as for some reason our dorm room had been unlocked the whole night I'd not needed it again to get back in, so it was in my shower bag) and the bus got started. In the time we were waiting I saw Graham again, so all good! John and Lya were not coming to Karijini which was a shame; we had a new arrival called Olivier though. ... read more

Our first stop after leaving Kununurra was Halls Creek. The caravan park was nice and quiet which suited us fine, as we had heard a few horror stories of drunken violence in the area. Halls Creek is the closest town to Wolfe Creek Crater, caused by a meteorite falling to Earth. It is the second largest in the world after Arizona in the USA. The crater is only accessible via a 4wd track and is 800m in diameter. Grady had been particularly looking forward to seeing the crater and was bitterly disappointed when told the road had been closed only a few days earlier. Flights over the area were $180 each but only for two or more people, so it was not possible for Grades to see the crater. I have vowed to return to the ... read more

Day 175 - Karijini National Park Hey, it’s the birthday of somebody special today! That’s right Emma Gosling, we’re talking about you! Happy Birthday chick, sorry we’re not there to share the cake but we hope you have a great day and we’ll speak to you soon. Amazing, we woke up to a new sound this morning; the sound of swarming bees! They spooked us out a bit because they sounded like they were trying to get in the caravan through the fly nets! They were so loud we thought we were at least surrounded but when Darryl took a look he could hardly see any! Weird! Time to get out of bed anyway, there’s lots of walking to be had! Karijini is the second largest national park in Western Australia and offers many different levels ... read more

Day 174 - De Grey River to Karijini National Park via Port Hedland! And there was us thinking that the early morning dawn chorus would wake us up at some ludicrous hour! Neither of us woke till just before 6am, what a lie in that was! It’s a relatively short journey to Port Hedland, a very industrial mining town where Rio Tinto and BHP rule all! It’s got a bit of a different look from Broome! Port Hedland is one of the busiest commodity ports in the world and the largest in Australia. BHP Billiton Iron Ore exports more than 100 million tonnes of iron ore per year from its harbour. Definitely a boys place! There’s no intention to stop overnight here, although we suspect it might be fun but we’re only here for the visitors ... read more

We were up at sunrise as you do when your sleeping in a tent as it gets so hot, had a big hearty breakfast and our walking adventure began. We started at Fortescue Falls where lots of fast natural water was pumping into the gorge, serpents made these water holes back in the day when the earth was soft, they say that these serpents still live in the gorge pools today, I was glad we did not see or feal one of the serpents while going for a swim and body beating from the water fall, Yes the water was cold we arrived there around 9am and the sun does not do much warming to the natural water gorge. I did snorkel for around 5mins but the water went dark and I did not like it, ... read more

The drive to Karajini seems to take forever. The roads have now become endless and monotonous, the beautiful coastal scenery now replaced with grasslands, bushes, some hills and mountains. The dry heat of the Pilbarra region becomes stifling and unbearable at times. The radio stations seem to be stuck in a 1980’s time warp or constantly play country music so we drive along to the sound of silence or me singing, at times resorting to playing whatever games can wind the time down. The odd car or campervan passes and we raise the obligatory acknowledgement sign... can’t imagine waving at passing cars in London (not politely anyway!!) When we arrive at Dale Gorge campsite the weather seems to have taken a turn for the worse and its clouding over. We spot our first wild dingo as ... read more

Old Man Take a Look at My Life To continue my journey north up to Broom, I could have tried to catch a lift from Coral Bay, but I didn’t fancy my chances, so instead I did the lazy thing and hopped on the Easyriders tour bus; It's benefits meant I wasn't waiting around, I was with fellow backpackers and I got to see the remote Karijini National Park in the Pilbara Desert - 600,000 square kilometres large! I also knew that there was approximately a 50 percent chance that the group would be great or rubbish. So, how’d the gamble go? Meet the Easyriderz crew Twats is a bit harsh it was just a shit assortment of people - eleven in all. I found myself to be the oldest person there; and when you have ... read more
