Great Ocean Road
Light house at The Split Point Some days have chuckles that set the tone for the day. After leaving the camp ground this morning nwe wanted to pop into the shops at Waurn Pond before travelling the Great Ocean Road from Torquay to Wye River.
The first chuckle came when we saw 3 sheep solve the lack of grass problem. They were standing on top of a series of hay roles, happily munching what the farmer had put aside for winter. Goats climbing? Yes, but for sheep to get a meter up would have taken some effort. We were past in the MH too quick for a photo, so you will just have to immagine the funny scene.
Now about Tom! He did it again today. He led us to within about 300 meters of the shopping centre, and then advised we should take a certain exit on the round-a-bout. Unfortunately, the said exit was closed, and no other signpost on the round-a-bout made sense. So after 3 circuits and a drive back up the motorway, Marg Marg did a better job and we got to the shops. Marg Marg proudly announced we had reached our destination.
Anyway, that got us all fixed up
Memorial Archway
Actuially, this is the third. Numbers one and two have been destroyed by fire. and on the way to the Woolworths Servo in Torquay before driving down the highway. Once we were past the access to the servo, Tom proudly announced that we had reached our destination. Marg Marg to the rescue and a navigation around some back streets, we got to the servo again and squeezed our way to the diesel pump.
Today the driving has been a little more testing as high winds were up again, and initially trailing (great for fuel economy) and then cross winds.
Now, Tom Tom announced in the middle of no where that we had reached our destination of Wye River. Marg Marg knew that was wrong because we hadn't yet crossed a certain river nor a lookout noted on the travel map. So, at the first opportunity we stopped for lunch, and then programmed the exact co-ordinates of the camping ground into Tom. Wow, he was spot on! We knew that because we could see the campsite as we came down the hill into Wye River township. Thanks Tom.
This afternoon I updated Tom Tom software and the latest Australian road maps. He has been advised that his position as chief navigator is
Plaque
Includes a list ot features of the G.O.R. under review, and Marg Marg may get the nod.
Anyway, we pulled into the camp, parked the rig, and the heavens opened.
Next chuckle came when, during the pouring rain, a magpie took a shower. That's not a big thing, but how he/she showered was as funny as a fight. The sloping annex on a caravan a couple of sites away had water rushing down, and it had a stream/puddle at the bottom of the slope. Birdie was twisting and a'shakeing, ducking, bobbing, wagging tail feathers until looking saturated and bedraggled. No photo because it was too wet for me to poke the camera out the window.
The journey down the Great Ocean Road, showed us yet another face of the continent's southern coast line. One of the pics shows the building storm cloud that produced rain and one almighty crack of thunder, and even a few hail stones. The thunder was dramatic, probably best described as something like a tip truck jumping off the cliff with a clanging metalic crash.
We are headed for Cape Otway, and over the next few days we may not have computer or phone network. Marg and I are looking
Northern Coast
Rock colour and formations changed as we headed south. forward to this great nature reserve and shooting up a great variety of native critters and birds. Maybe even a lazy day doing nothing.
All four of us feel that since we crossed Sydney, we have seen and done so much, our minds and memory are a blurr. Rob does this blog with his photos plus a few borrowed from Marg, David runs his own blog for family, Mary writes a journal and Marg has a travel group (only by invitation) as well for her friends. In three weeks Marg and I have taken about 1500 photos. We are grateful for digital cameras. The old 35mm colour film and prints would break the budget.
