You go Girl!
Chelsea is my wild child. She has a sprit like no other. Week 2:
Hey everyone!!! Well it’s time again for a week review. Let me see last Sunday I went to my first Aussi
Bar-B-Q. All I have to say about that one is Thank God for Chicken! I think that is what I ate. LOL
Anyways my second week of teaching went really well. I actually got a chance to get up and teach a lesson in math. I taught a two day lesson in perimeter. We started out with an outdoor activity that went well until the mosses (mosquitoes) came after us. They did really well with the first day’s lesson. But I was even more please when they were able to complete a group activity the next day. The weirdest thing about teaching here is that I don’t have a text book to follow. They have standards similar to what we have and they have a master plan of what ones they want to cover when and they decide as a team how they are going to teach that standard. I’m starting to like having little freedom in my teaching. The two grade one teachers have set aside a time each week where one teacher takes both
My class
All dressed up for fashions on the field day. classes so that the other teacher can have some planning time. During this time the students do math rotations. It was interesting to see how the two classes interact together.
In reading this week I did a running record with a few students. I had seen something like this done back in the states (Mrs. Duke’s Room) so I was eager to see how it is implemented here. The students are given book to read loud to you, and based on how well they do in reading it then that determines what level of books the should be reading. This is very similar to the way I saw it done in the states.
The best part of this week at school was on Monday when my students went to music. I heard great things about he music program at the school, so I stayed around to see what it was all about. I was blown away. Not by the students ability to sing, but there ability to play the drums. Bongo Drums that is… The teacher would start a pattern and with in seconds the students were joining right in. Sure they have had a full year of
Mrs. Pots
I've never seen a tea pot so big. this, so you would think that they should be good. But it wasn’t so much their ability to play that blew me away…it was the joy that was flowing from every inch of their little bodies. Sure they messed up here in there, but they jumped right back in. They even suckered me into playing with them. It was awesome. (Mom I think I might take lessons from Julia when I get home!!!!)
Monday afternoon was a special day the school got to watch a play. It was put on by a children's drama program. was Beauty and the Beast. It was really funny and the kids loved it. (see pictures)
Wednesday was a hard day for me because I miss Halloween. I did have a few students in my class that went trick or treating, but it still wasn’t the same. I got a picture of Kyle in is costume and a box of candy corn. I took the candy corn to school and shared it with my students, and the teachers. Lauren (the girl I’m staying with) gave me a card for Halloween. It was funny because there weren’t any Halloween cards at the store so
End of the play.
360 students singing all at once in a tiny gym. It was crazy. she bought a birthday card and crossed out birthday and put Halloween on it. I thought that was very thoughtful of her.
Friday at school was a big day because it was Fashions on the field day. This was done for the Melbourne Cup Race that is next Tuesday. So the girls made fascinators and the boys made ties of jockey silks. (See pictures) Then in the afternoon we went out side and the students got to see what the other classes had made. It was very interesting to see how much of an ordeal this horse race is.
Well the final thing that I did this week with my class was to have them write letters back to my students at Western. They did a great job of coming up with questions, but struggled with what to say about the Island. They got them done on Friday just in time for me to mail them back to the states.
* Friday after school is drinks: different grades are in charge of bringing drinks and food and the teachers stay around and talk about the week and what they are doing for the weekend over a nice cold one. Sorry I still can’t bring myself to drink in the school.
Well NO school Monday or Tuesday because of the Melbourne Cup. So make sure to read about my long weekend!!!
Talk to you all soon.
I LOVE YOU TO THE MOON AND BACK
