Downtown Melbourne from a shrine to Australian service people.
This blog entry on 9/23 will be the last of our trip to Australia. We wrapped up with a day of exploring Melbourne, more shopping, visiting the Royal Botanical Garden, and packing to go home. We leave Melbourne on Wednesday morning and arrive in LAX on Wednesday morning, arriving back in PDX by Wednesday afternoon. The international date line helps us quite a bit as we return home after traveling an estimated 23 hours plus to get there.
It has been a great trip. We had four different vehicles (not counting the first RV that Dean crunched) and drove an estimated 3,675 miles and took six flights. We met some great folks during our travels, and we were able to catch up with old friends along the way. We saw spectacular sights (sunrises at Uluru, for example) and some silly things (such as the penguin statue in Penguin, Tasmania). We have over 2,400 photos. We spent a lot of money along the way, but we saved money by staying in caravan parks (i.e. RV parks) and eating hot noodles and crackers/cheese in our hotel rooms. The amount of time, trouble, and expense is not really what this trip was about, however.

The adventurers at the Royal Botanical Garden, wrapping up our Australian adventure.
It was about cherished time with family as we all grow and change. This is truly priceless, as the ad campaign says.
We look forward to sharing the experiences with our family and friends (i.e. our “mates”) back home. We have missed you all immensely, and we look forward to soon saying in person “how you going” (translated—“how are you doing”—the common greeting here). It has been a great ride.
