We left Canberra at approximately 8am for the long journey south to Melbourne. Although it's only about a six and a half hour journey, rest stops and torrential rain hindered what started as a pleasant trip.
Of course, we knew we'd have to stop a few times along the way, but we didn't anticipate so much rain that we could barely see the car in front of us. I must say, I am very thankful for not driving on this trip. Albert was the lucky one who had to brave it. If it works, I'll post the video I took as we entered Melbourne. Streets had patches of flooding and I was on look out for giant puddles.
In the end, we made it safely to our hotel. We are staying at Somerset on Elizabeth, which are serviced apartments. We booked it because we knew it had parking available. When we made the bookings in June of this year, Albert wanted what he deemed a 'fancier hotel' but I like budget. I don't mean hostel style - even I'm a little iffy about that - but considering most of our time spent in our hotel is for sleeping, don't
have the need for spending a fortune on rooms that we will never stay in. So I booked this against his wishes. Oops.
We found the parking easily enough and went to check in. Here, they have valet parking at a cost, but we decided to go with that. Now, after we checked in and went up to our rooms, Albert said to me: "Okay, this is actually a good location."
And that it is. It is literally next door to The Strand - a shopping complex, and is minutes walking distance from just about anything. We booked tickets to the Big Bash between Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades at Etihad Stadium and it took as 20 minutes each way to walk. So we may be saving on public transport in the coming days.
We barely had time to relax after checking in today. We reached the hotel around 4:30 and arrived for the cricket at 6:30. In between we went shopping for some food. Another reason we chose (well I chose) this place is because it has cooking facilities a regular hotel doesn't, so we can save money on breakfast. Though, they also offer a breakfast
service for $17 buffet style if that's what you are interested in.
The cricket was exciting! The Perth Scorchers have been my favourite team since the beginning of the Big Bash League, so we immediately booked when we saw they were playing when we were going to be here. For general admission, tickets are only $20, so that was another plus. Albert didn't really have a team, but he bought a Renegades jersey and decided that was his team. Unfortunately they didn't sell opposing team merchandise, so I missed out on buying something.
It was a great match. The Renegades didn't score high at all, but then it didn't look as if the Scorchers were going to catch a low total. For those of you who know cricket and Twenty20 cricket, I'll say that the Scorchers ended up winning on the very last ball. They needed five runs off the last ball, and they hit a six. Talk about getting my heart racing! But I was happy.
By he time we walked back to our hotel it was 11pm, and now I am here with horrible internet, trying to upload the few photos of today. If you see them, I managed, if you don't, I gave up and posted this blog without! Fingers crossed!
