England Cricket team
On the pitch at the MCG, discussing how to get Matthew Hayden and Andrew Symonds out, together they scored around 300 runs! Thanks for all the christmas wishes everyone!
We have been in Melbourne for 5 nights (only another 3 to go!) and we have been having a fantastic time.
We had a laugh on our first day trying to navigate the trams when we had no idea where we should be going and how to pay for it! After lugging the blasted suitcases around again we were both sweating and grateful when we found our hotel.
The rest of our first day was spent walking about for hours! We also visited the Melbourne Gaol, where Ned Kelly was hung. It was a bit creepy but really interesting. We found the shops, and the mcg, and fed square and managed to work out the trams and trains etc. We then met up with our friend from back home, Ben who had been here for 2 months (or so) already so could recommend where to go etc... well thats what we thought anyway, he could recommend where to drink and that was about it! (Thanks Ben!)
The next morning we went shopping. I didn't get anything, I can't figure out a way to fit everything in my suitcase now, without
Lucy and Captain Cook
This is me and a statue of Captain Cook in Fitzroy Gardens having extra stuff! The shops are really good though, I think there might be too many of them! We then went to the Aquarium, which was really cool. Probably the best Aquarium we have been to. We then went up to the observation deck, to get a better view of the city.
On Christmas Eve we went to the Immigration Museum and found out about what it was like to come and live here at different times over the past. I really enjoyed it, it took my mind off Christmas for a bit and its the sort of history that I like.
We then tried to go shopping to get each other something for christmas but that turned into a massive row. We gave up and came back to the hotel very depressed and wanting to be at home with our friends and families instead of stuck in a strange place with no where to go on christmas day. We soon made up and tried to figure out a way to celebrate christmas properly so, we went to listen to some carols in Fed Square... it helped a bit.
On Christmas day itself we spent most of
Federation Square
This is Philip in Federation Square, Melbourne. the day trying to find somewhere to eat! I ended up having pizza and Phil did a bit better with a steak. We then spent the rest of the day in various pubs with Ben and a couple of his friends. It really didn't feel right though. We feel like Christmas was cancelled so at some point we are going to try and have another one!
Boxing day was a bit better because more places where open as normal. We went to Firzroy Gardens and saw Captain Cooks parents house which was dismantled in Yorkshire and rebuilt over here. We also went to the Melbourne Museum which was more Phils kind of thing! We saw a stuffed horse (Phar Lap) and dinosaur bones and the ashes urn (again) so we've seen it on 2 continents now! We then went to Fed Square to catch up on the cricket on the big screen and went for a couple of drinks with Ben.
Today we have been to the cricket! It wasn't very exciting until the last 15 minutes (apart from the first session which we missed because Phil was a bit rough last night and we needed the sleep,
he's fine now). It was a really good atmosphere though. We couldn't believe how high up we where though, the mcg is huge!
As for the weather - its been chilly and raining! Just like home. We thought it would be boiling! So, no improvement on our tans...
Also, the hotel that we are in is okay until you go into the shared bathrooms on our floor, after all the lovely campsite amenities it was a bit of shock to the system. We managed to upgrade our room over Christmas to an ensuite which was great, we even had sockets and a tv in the room and if we had needed it, aircon. We have had to go back to the basic room now though. Bummer.
Anyway, I will write again when we get to Sydney for New Year, if its as good as it has been here, we think that we will have a great time.
Hope that everything is okay with everyone and that everybody had a lovely christmas. If I don't get to blog before, HAPPY NEW YEAR!
