Hawthorn v Carlton at the MCG Day 6 - Box Hill North
Today was all about the footie! Hawthorn v Carlton. Clearly a walk was in order to set us up for the day from which I (Sarah) was late getting back and was blamed for making us miss the 12:50pm train from Box Hill! Luckily it wasn't just down to me so my guilt was short lived, there was a crowd travelling to the MCG with us and our good friend Dale with young son Ben was late too!
We eventually set off from Harrison Street to the Box Hill train station where the atmosphere began to take hold! Firstly we needed to purchase our train tickets unlike Darren and Grant who both get a free ride courtesy of being officers of the law! We had no idea what ‘zone’ the MCG came under, luckily the chap behind the counter did and we were soon queuing with the rest of the AFL fans for the next train to arrive!
There’s such a lot of banter on the train between the opposing Hawthorn and Carlton fans, everyone’s convinced their team will win and spirits are sky high! By the time we get to the
MCG and join the queue for extra ‘members’ tickets (Grant’s a member so we get to sit in the ‘posh’ end!), we miss the first "bounce" but the following quarters are in no way a disappointment.
We were glued to the action as the game unfolded! I proudly wore Grant’s Hawthorn scarf and along with Grant, Puneet and Darryl we cheered on ‘our’ team in absolute belief that we’d win the match easily. Dale, Ben and Darren are all Carlton fans so with similar passion thought exactly the same about their team!
Not long after half time we deserted Dale and son Ben for some "refreshment" at the bar. We'd been sat up in the gods in the members area which meant we could watch the game unfold with all the different tactics in full view whereas in the bar, the TV screens gave a much more focused view. Surprisingly we didn’t last long in the bar and returned to our seats for the last quarter which was nail biting to say the least.
Going into the last minute of time the score was 106 (Hawthorn) to 101 (Carlton). Carlton gained possession and needed a goal to
take the win but (Brendan) Fevola's shot hit the post on the way in giving them just one point. We couldn't believe it and neither could anyone else, especially poor Dale who was devastated that defeat had been clinched from the jaws of victory!
What a match! The final score was 106 Hawthorn to 102 Carlton. Over 69'000 people piled out of the MCG on to the streets of Melbourne and the atmosphere was amazing! The queue outside Richmond train station prompted us to participate in a beverage or 4 at the nearest public house, The Cricketers Arms, where Carlton & Hawthorn fans watched the replays, groaned all over again and wildly rejoiced in "We're a happy team at Hawthorn, We're the Mighty Fighting Hawks. We love our Club, and we play to win, Riding the bumps with a grin (at Hawthorn). Come what may, you'll find us striving, Team work is the thing that talks, One for all and all for one Is the way we play at Hawthorn. We are the Mighty Fighting Hawks." sung to the tune of Yankee Doodle Dandy! Queue lots of scarf waving and general grimaces from Carlton supporters!
We finally found
our way out of the accommodating pub and caught the train back to Box Hill, Dale had been right this morning after all in that we didn’t need a return ticket. It was a free for all!
A ladies night had been planned by Anna I quickly had a shower to turn back into a lady and Darryl got sent next door with the men who were baby sitting all the respective kids! The ladies group of myself, Anna, Colleen, Liz, Poorvi, Mel and Nicola had a great girl chit chat followed by a bit of Barbara Streisand karaoke and then a rendition of Queen's "I want to break free" complete with Hoover, feather duster and strutting mostly from Nicola! Lord help us if Colleen actually does put the video on ‘You Tube’, the photos are bad enough!
By the time the men returned the ladies weren’t behaving like ladies at all and the men were less than sober! A good night all round really. Despite all this going on we did manage to catch up with Ed and the racing gang back home as they're racing at Shakey this weekend so via the handy webcam we’ve been
able to keep an eye on their performance, it’s all going very well!
There was only one downside to today, and it might well be a blessing. We’ve been asking people’s opinion on Jackaroo's - the vehicle we’re thinking of purchasing - and they've advised us against them! So ... guess what ... the darn vehicle search continues!
