01 Perched
I am with a juvenile Rosella perched on my hand. Geo: -37.1414, 142.519
We had a sleep in this morning because it was too cold to get up. While packing we were distracted by the birds. Just like every other morning they were outside making a racket. We went outside and feed them the remainder of the the bird food. We feed the Eastern Rosellas, Corellas, Cockatoos and a pair of Kookaburras. Nearby there were many emus, wallabies and kangaroos.
We finished packing and drove through the tiny town of Hall's Gap for the last time - but not without stopping for a last award winning custard slice. We stopped to buy brunch from the bakery and a copy of the Sunday Herald Sun - my favourite newspaper that I have been missing for years.
We were still excited by the sight of wallabies, kangaroos and emus in the front yards. I have loved being back here, wish we could have stayed longer, but our trip to Australia has gone so quickly.
Twenty minutes after leaving Halls Gap we arrived at Lake Fyans. It was another beautiful, clear day. There weren't many people fishing on the lake. I happily ate my vanilla slice, drank my iced coffee and read the paper while Paul
02 Scratching
The rosella scratching my head. fished. He didn't have much luck, only a few small trout. An hour or so later we left and started making our way back to mum and dad's.
We stopped in Ararat to stretch our legs at a lookout at the top of a hill. From here we could see the mountain ranges of the Grampians and the surrounding countryside. We continued along the Western Highway. Just outside of Ballarat we stopped at Langi Ghiran State Park to have a quick snack. We would have liked to spend some time here, as there were a few hikes and waterfalls, but we had to get moving.
I was looking forward to driving through Ballarat again. I moved to Ballarat for university when I was 18 and had lived there for 5 years. We entered the city through the Avenue of Honour - a tribute to soldiers. The road was lined with elm and poplar trees.
Our first stop was my old student residence Beaufort House in the suburb of Alfredton. I had lived here for two and a half years. What used to be the carpark is now units and is no longer a student residence, it is now privately owned. It
03 Feeding
I am feeding two rosellas with some emus in the background. seemed quite eerie - there used to be so much going on here. So many memories....
We drove down the main street - Sturt St, nothing much seems to have changed here. Next place was to show Paul the outside of the second place that I used to live - a cosy miners cottage, right in town. The front had really deteriorated and was obviously still a rental property.
Next was my old unit in Mt Helen, very close to the university. It still looked the same. We drove through the university and then again drove along the Western Highway all the way back to Melbourne and then another hour to mum and dad's place. We thoroughly enjoyed this trip and wished we could see more of Victoria.
