Sunday, 5 September 2004 After getting back from Beechworth I spent two nights in Melbourne before leaving on Sunday morning for a trip to the west of Victoria. Most of the day was taken up driving to Warrnambool. Booked into the City Heart Motel. The room has cable TV and the accommodation is good. Messed around on the computer for a while before ordering a meal from a local restaurant which was delivered just after six o'clock. Watched TV for the rest of the evening.
Monday, 6 September 2004 The weather has been good and I hope it stays that way. It was a nine o'clock start. As I walked through the door of the three year old kindergarten, I introduced myself to the two ladies who were in charge of the centre. Didn't get a chance to organise the children but I was still finished around eleven o'clock.
My next job was over one-hundred kilometers to the west. It took an hour to reach Portland. My afternoon job was to photograph some primary school students who missed out on portraits when the school photographers were in town. I was finished at the school about half an hour later. Packed
up and drove back to Warrnambool.
Tuesday, 7 September 2004 This mornings session went well. When I was finished I drove to another Kindergarten on the edge of Warrnambool. More children who missed being photographed when the kindergarten photographer was in town. Not many children but the teacher helped organise each of my subjects and when the group photo was finished (twenty-eight children) I packed up the gear and returned to my motel room.
In the afternoon went in search of whales. A boardwalk-lookout has been built at Logan's Beach. Found myself a vantage point and started to photograph the Southern White Whales that have made the bay their nursery. I spent an enjoyable couple of hours photographing at least two mothers and their calves. The video was working on the tripod while I used the still camera resting on the rail. In the evening I edited the video on my computer.
Wednesday, 8 September 2004 Another two sessions at the two kindergartens I worked in yesterday. Weather is not the best and it was well after two o'clock in the afternoon when I saw blue skies and decided another trip to Logan's Beach was in order.
Equipped
with tripod, video camera and still camera I was ready to get more images of whales. I positioned myself at one end of the boardwalk and looked in the direction where most tourists were pointing. Every now and again I heard them say "I can see one!" No matter how hard I looked, nothing came into my view finder. In the end, decided to walk along the beach in the direction where everybody was looking. The round trip which included leaving the beach and walking though the coastal vegetation took at least an hour. At one point I found my self high on the sand dunes where I hoped the elevation would reward me. The only marine animal I found was a dead turtle whose shell was remarkable soft. My only fear was learning that the whales had turned up while I was gone. But they had chosen to stay away from Logan's Beach today. I was exhausted by time the car came into view. Just a morning session tomorrow.
