Part 4

Saturday 13th December 2008

Well I felt like a rally driver today - so much fun up and down the twisting mountain roads, 2nd gear, 3rd gear for hours!!

Today we had some good old Scottish weather - rain, rain and more rain and lots of wind thrown in for good measure.

We left Bicheno and drove to St Helens Point and watched the big waves in the rain then through Douglas Apsley National Park and made a stop at St Columba Falls - I think Tasmania's biggests waterfall - they were pretty impressive espcially today I think because of all the torrential rain. We all looked great in our waterproofs!!!

We stopped off at at the Holy Cow Cafe for Hot Chocs and some cheese tasting. Then drove through Derby, Scottdale and on to Launceston, Tasmania's 2nd largest "city" after Hobart.

I found it hard to get too excited about Launceston - especially in this weather. One thing I did want to see was the J. Boags brewery to see the home of Australia's much loved beer but its closed on weekends. Boo.

We looked around the cataracts (some unintersting water) then booked into a hostel as none of us were willing to camp in this weather - we'd be washed away! Had a quick look round then city then we had an early night - again appreciating being able to sleep on actual beds rather than the cold ground!!!!
