Kevins breakfasts are a fulls days eating. Our waistlines have already increased!
Early start today to pick up the campervan. This involved a bus out to the airport and then a short taxi ride. We used Go Cheap Campervans as they accepted the RACQ discounts. When I got there they said the van I wanted was unavailable and they gave me a upgrade to one that was only 1 month old! A 2 berth Toyota Hi Ace. Think Maxi taxi with a top. In and out within 30mins.
Off back to town and in hindsight should have thrown the GPS out the window. "Yolla" we nicknamed her, only because the GPS took us to a small village called Yolla, in the middle of nowhere one late night, miles from where we wanted to go.
Anyway Yolla insisted that woolies was down a particular street which was possible the narrowest in Hobart. Katie saw the sign 2 streets over and we stocked up for the 2 weeks we'd be down here.
A lovely drive up to Mt Wellington. The closer we got to the top, the more snow we saw. We were already excited to be on the
road, the snow made it all the better. Plenty of photo opportunities and we watched the clouds come in and down quite rapidly. We were already a bit behind schedule so we started our journey south.
I had planned just a quick trip to Willie Smiths and maybe try a couple of their ciders. But once inside their restaurant we couldn't resist trying their 4 drink sampler. Choices were made and a decision to stay longer and enjoy a delicious lunch washed down with a couple more ciders was the right move. We could have settled in for the afternoon!
Luckily for us the next stop was the Huon Jet Boats. These things are basically a V8 motor on skates, they turn on a dime and can float on 6 inches of water. Our driver was a full on tappet head who loves his job. Not too sure about his political beliefs but otherwise a good way to kill a 1/2 hour. We used our iventure card for this and got a pretty good discount.
One thing we have noticed is that many places only open between 10.00 and 4.00pm meaning we had to be careful where
we wanted to go and how far we had to travel. That, and Optus has bugger all coverage in Tassie. No mobile internet to be had at Huonville but we chanced upon a cafe that had free internet with every coffee. Calls were made to our next destination which was the Tahune Air Walk at Geeveston. By the time we get there, the walk will be closed.
So we quickly changed direction and headed to the quaintly named Snug, for our first night out with the van. Something of a learning experience for both of us in how to set ourselves up for the night. Must admit it did take a couple of days to get everything down pat, making the beds, changing clothes and cooking and eating in such a small area. But once we had a pattern it was pretty easy to cope.
We thought we'd have a quiet night reading in the caravan parks kitchen but we met 2 brothers and their partners who were spending 18 days exploring just the East Coast of Tassie. Had a very nice night with them and a few laughs. They were also headed to Bruny Island as we
were in the morning.
