After yesterday’s exertions we kept it nice and easy today and just wandered around Adelaide City. We started with breakfast with Meredith at the Market Street Cafe and then went into the Central Market for a quick look. We took the opportunity to stock up on some fruit to take with us tomorrow as we continue on our way to the Yorke Peninsula. As is usually the case with markets there was a huge array of delicious looking produce on offer but, as we are on the road, we were only able to buy a few items that will be consumed in the next couple of days. The market proved to be a very popular spot on a Saturday morning!
After taking our produce back to Meredith’s, we headed out again to meet Cathy and Steve at St. Francis Xavier’s Catholic Cathedral. From there we wandered northwards through lanes and arcades to Rundle Mall. We walked along the mall and Bernie spied a glass lift that was mounted on the front of the K-mart building. ‘I want to go up in the lift to take a photo looking down over the mall’ said Bernie. Bernie and I walked back along
the mall and entered said lift to be confronted with a sign saying that the lift was not to be used for joyriding! Hmmn, I think we might have been joyriding?? Undeterred we rode to the top, Bernie took photos overlooking the mall and then we rode down again.
From the mall we turned northwards again, passing through the University of Adelaide on our way to the River Torrens. We crossed to the other side of the river via the Adelaide University Footbridge. We wandered westward along the river and under the City Bridge before taking the River Torrens Footbridge to the Adelaide Festival Centre. This area looked very different from our previous visit when the whole area was being redeveloped and had large sections barricaded off. Most of the work is now finished although they were furiously working on the plaza area where there were signs up saying that there is an opening event scheduled to take place very soon. I hope they finish in time?!
After lunch at the Malt Shovel Taphouse we made our way to the South Australian Museum. South Australia’s museum is free and it is excellent. We certainly didn’t see all of
it this afternoon, we concentrated on the Aboriginal Aboriginal cultural gallery, the palaeontology galleries and admired (?) the giant squid that is displayed over three floors in the centre of the staircase!
When we exited the museum the sun was still shining, but the wind was picking up. We started heading back towards our starting point where we then headed back to our city apartment and Cathy and Steve returned to Glenelg.
Tonight we dined with Meredith and Greg at the Star of Siam. After enjoying a delicious Thai meal we had a little bit of room left for ice-cream so we managed to sample the offerings at our third ice-cream parlour in as many days! But really, can you ever have too much ice-cream?!
