Ok this is the long awaited story about australia....get ready!! i left on friday night from LA and arrived in Sydney on Sunday morning. Then I got on an immediate connecting flight which I almost missed to Brisbane which is the capital of Queensland. I met up with Mike and we walked around the city, through the Queen St. Mall area and to South Bank, which has a place you can swim with a small beach right up against the river, plus a great view of the city. The next day we rented a car and started the drive up the west coast. We stopped in Noosa Heads Beach for lunch and walked around the little town, which is a rich little area for mainly retirees who have too much money. Then onto Hervey Bay for the night. Then we rented an SUV which was so tiny compared to all the others but we only had two people instead of 8. so we rent this car, and take a ferry to Fraser Island. Beautiful!!!! absolutely amazing!!! you have to have a car with 4-wheel drive in order to get anywhere on the island because all the roads are sand
and it takes about an hour to get to the other side where the hotels are. There was not much time, so we drove to one of the many lakes on the island, Lake Birrabeen. The lakes on Fraser Island are known for their purity, you can actually drink the water if you want to because it's so clear and purified from the sand. the next day we drove up the beach known as 70-mile beach, completely open, passing a few cars here and there. right along the water, definitely something i've never done before, except that time we drove on the beach to florida in the little blue van, but all i remember from that time is getting stuck. we passed the S.S. Maheno shipwreck which was abandoned about 30 years ago and is just a rusted ship on the beach. Then we made it to Indian Head which is supposed to be really good for spotting whales but unfortunately I didn't see any. They said it was about two weeks early for them and I have a hard time telling between a dolphin or whale and a wave. I did see some dolphins on the ferry though. Then
we walked up to Miller Point which is known for its Champagne Pools. Just little pools shaped in the rocks that hold the water when waves crash over the wall. On the way back on the beach we stopped to look at the Coloured (Colored) Sands really quick and continued down the beach because it was getting way too close to high tide which is when you need to be off the beach. Then our little car got stuck which was hilarious. Also, the beach is used for an airplane landing strip and there are signs that warn to look out for airplanes. All of a sudden there was one in front of the car and then it took over right above us. Pretty crazy!! The third day on the Island, Mike and I hiked on a 6.6 km trail through the rain forest to Lake McKenzie. Really really really pretty. see pictures below!! On the way back though I almost stepped right on a snake and we almost missed the ferry back to the mainland because we couldn't decide how to get around it. But eventually just made a run up through the forest which probably had a million
a sign on the side of the road
you know i was looking for koala bears and kangaroos the whole time and the only ones i saw were on signs more snakes in it.
Then it was on with the adventure up the coast! Went to Rockhampton and flew in a 6-seater plane, yes six, which means two seats for pilots in the front then a row of two and a final row of two seats. I guess there's a first time for everything. I was terrified, because it felt like i was bigger than the little tiny plane but then we hit really bad turbulence right before landing. But the little plane made it to Great Keppel Island where we stayed for seven days. Not too much to do on the Island besides lay out on the beach and by the pool. It actually wasn't that warm so it was kind of a struggle to actually get in the pool. But it was really pretty and relaxing. Then we flew back to Rockhampton and headed north once again.
We arrove in Airlie beach, which is a total backpackers resort. So many people travel through there and there are campers everywhere. It has a bay and the second largest marina in Australia. Actually got to see Ivana Trump's yacht when we went on a sunset cruise the first night. Then
me on the ferry
with an australian flag the next day we went on an adventure cruise on the Camira. It took us through the Whitsundays Islands to Whitehaven Beach which is one of the top 10 beaches in the world. I am still working on seeing all the other ones!!! Then it dropped us off in the water around Border Island to snorkel for a while. Seeing life coral reef is definitely amazing!!!! Just wish I would've had an underwater camera. But that's ok, maybe next time.
I finished my trip to Australia with a ferry ride through the Islands to Hamilton Island to catch a plane back to Brisbane and on my way back to LA!
