26th - 31st July: Arrived at Mission Beach via 2 Dick Smith stores, to acquire a new antenna for our TV on the PC. It is raining, raining, raining. On Tuesday the checkout operator at Woolies told us that in July they’d had 20 days of recorded rainfall in Tully (it IS the wettest place in the country!) and they were hoping it would stop soon as the Tully show is on this weekend. The caravan park is somewhat sodden, but we’ve booked and paid for 18 nights - surely it can’t go on raining for another 18 days!
Rain eased to intermittent by Wednesday 28th, and today (Saturday) is beautiful, after the usual Mission Beach early morning high clouds that look threatening but soon roll away. As well as our new antenna, we’ve acquired a signal booster for the TV which gives us the best reception we can hope for (read into that what you will!). Used successfully for 2 nights, then we had an explosion of a Ginger beer bottle (commercial, diet ginger beer!) at 12:30 am. Everything in the van was soaked, and glass shards went everywhere, luckily except on us, sound asleep in bed. Our external PC TV card got soaked, and now seems to no longer work. SO we are back to no TV at all, and not much in the way of newspapers either - The Australian is no match for the SMH in terms of balanced reporting. At least the internet still works, but the political news is all so depressing I think I’d rather not know!
I haven’t taken ONE photo since we’ve been in Mission Beach - I think we were very focused on getting here and just vegg-ing (?spelling) out. Well we’ve been doing that very well, going to the beach, reading, walking, eating, drinking …. It’s a full life here, though lived at a gentle pace. Photos will arrive later!
