During our stay in Sarah and Darryl’s house in Moira, both before my heart operation and once I had begun to show signs of a recovery, I had established a regular Sunday night routine. I had found my way, partly by recommendation, to a splendid folk club in Quorn, about a 30 minutes drive away. Quorn folk club is made up of about 25 or 30 singers, musicians, reciters of poems etc of which about a ten attend regularly and others intermittently. The average number of attendees each week is 15 or so and if more than that attend, the small back-room of the Blacksmiths Arms in Meeting Street is full to over-flowing. But the atmosphere is superb and the evenings are conducted in a relaxed and jovial manner in which all contributions are well received, ... read more

The local pig and calf market is held in Warwick every Wednesday morning and it’s a well known local attraction so off we went to sample the atmosphere. The area around the market was very busy with plenty of country folk and farmers with their trucks and cattle transporters around. Buying and selling had been going on since about 7am but the pens were still full of pigs, goats, calves, chickens and geese. It was great to listen to the auctioneer and watch the bidding process but we were afraid to move in case one of us bought a chicken! We chatted to a nice young girl from Allora who had taken the day off school to go along with her parents, to sell her over aggressive rooster and to buy some "chooks" which she did ... read more

Monday morning dawned a brighter day - much to our relief. We decided to have a casual day around Warwick so Daphne set off for a walk by the river, one of her favourite spots. We strolled into town via Leslie Park determined to seek out the sculptors who are spending 3 weeks as part of a “Sculpting Symposium” creating new masterpieces which, when completed, will be displayed in and around Warwick. They were working in a roped off area at the far end of the park and, at the moment, the blocks of stone they are sculpting are unrecognizable as anything tangible. We promised to return later in the week to see how they are getting on. We were just walking by a dilapidated old building when an elderly lady came out from beside it ... read more

It’s Saturday 4th September and we have been in Aus for 3 weeks and a very interesting and diverse time it has been. Today was a ‘catching up’ day so PIE got a quick clean (although we still need to find an effective way of getting the dead flies off the front), clothes were washed and parts of the house cleaned. Daphne went for a walk by the river and later we strolled into town, also going alongside the river where we saw what we think was a darter bird fishing. It stayed submerged for ages and never fully showed itself for a photo. We passed one of the many sports fields and spotted lots of groups of youngsters playing soccer (English football!!). We’ve grown to enjoy Aussie Rules footie but we are Poms so will ... read more

First of all we should say a very big Happy Birthday to lovely Amy who is 8 years old today (2nd). Grandma Daphne also sends you a big hug. It was lovely to speak to you and find out what you’ve been up to. Hi also to sister Charlotte and Mum and Dad, Anna and Grant. On Wednesday, as we came into Warwick from Dubbo, Graham spotted a music shop so we stopped to see what guitars they had on display. Sarah had bought a Spanish guitar when she was in Aus and had left it in the caravan. But she had agreed with her Dad that it wasn’t the best when it came to accompanying folk songs. Graham had picked up the guitar when we were in Mansfield and wondered if a part exchange was ... read more

Early on Monday, 30th August Graham, as he had promised to do, took David’s work van down to the Ford garage in town. David had arranged for it to have work done on the gear box while he is away. Graham asked the mechanic if it would be ready in a day or two but he was cheerfully told “it’s a gear-box mate - it’ll probably take a bit longer than that!”. Graham walked back to the house for a bit of exercise then we both set off on the long trek back to Dubbo to return the hire car and pick up PIE, leaving Daphne in charge of the house for a couple of days. Fortunately the Toyota Aurion was very comfortable and, being an automatic, was very easy to drive so it wasn’t too ... read more

Saturday morning was spent ‘chill-axing’, as young Charlie back in Tewkesbury UK would say, and we also spent time finding out more about what David will be doing in Tanzania. Eighteen people from Warwick will spend two weeks working at The School of St Jude, a very special school in Arusha, northern Tanzania. The school has steadily grown from the seed of a dream that a young Australian woman, Gemma Sisia, had back in the late 1990’s. The first pupils were enrolled in 2002 and gradually, with the help of Rotary Clubs and sponsors all over the world, the school has been able to expand year on year to meet the needs of the growing number of scholars. To read more about the school log on to its website School of St Jude. David, being a ... read more

So Wednesday morning came and we were keen to be on our way but the car was still at the garage. The water pump was fitted but there was still a problem and the mechanic diagnosed that there was now an issue with the starter motor. He thought we might eventually need a new one but we needed to be in a bigger town to give us a chance of getting one swiftly. We were well past Wagga Wagga, the nearest big town, so we decided that, once he got the car started, we would try and make our way towards Warwick. Eventually the car was started (I think the mechanic was as pleased to see the back of us as we were to be on our way!) so we loaded up our bags again and ... read more

After leaving Dalby, we continued east along the Darling Downs and finally up some hills to Toowoomba, which is known as the Garden City. It's quite a few years since we visited Toowoomba and were surprised what a huge city it is now. We drove around town, having a good look, then we decided we'd go north a few kilometres to the town of Highfields to visit a little shop I'd followed online Simple Things Small Joys. As luck would have it, when we finally found the shop, it was closed - only open Thursday to Sunday. We did have a look around the other shops there though and had lunch in a little restaurant in the complex. Back to Toowoomba where we visited Dymocks and Spotlight. We were going to stay the night in a ... read more

Day 56 - Goomburra Forest Reserve Happy Fathers Day to both of our Dads at home in the UK. Hopefully we'll speak to both of you today but we hope the sun is shining and you both enjoy yourselves. We had a pretty late night in the end so we're a bit sleepy this morning for the dawn chorus of Laughing Kookaburras! There must have been a few of them as they were really loud! By the time we were ready to go anywhere the weather had gone from dry to that spitting, misty sort of ish-rain weather! We didn't have any concrete plans so thought we'd pop into the tourist information place in Warwick for ideas. Just before we left, Darryl got talking to our neighbour about our UHF radio. It's never worked and although ... read more
