The Cape
After husking a coconut at Cape Trib. Well, it's been awhile since we last journaled. Reason being is that over the last week or so, not too many exciting things have happened. After leaving Cairns we traveled up north to the tropical rainforest of Cape Tribulation. After having our van for 20 minutes, we received our first ticket and early the next morning were threatened by "the man," for living in a van down by the river, or in this case the beach. The drive to Cape Tribulation was a 1 1/2 lane, unpaved road meandering through the rainforest and the coastline. We spent the majority of our time at the Cape on hikes and discussing defense techniques against the infamous Cassowary. For those not familiar with this animal, as we weren't, picture a colorful cocky ass ostrich with a chip on its shoulder. We finally came to the conclusion that all it would take is a swift kick to the sternum and a right cross to the jaw to put one of 'em down. On our final day, we walked through the rainforest towards Cape Tribulation beach. Near the entrance to the beach we spotted "The Gatekeeper", a large Cassowary. Up until this point we had

He informed us that: A) This bird previously had a tourist held up on a picnic table for 20 minutes B) Could easily disembowel a human if it so desired C) Was an endangered species....we could just see the headlines now:
Two Americans Arrested for Killing a Harmless Endangered Specie. As we approached the bird it stopped eating and looked up. Fortunately for us we had worn the brightest colors possible which were red and bright green. We figured this was more than ample camouflage. As it was approaching the group of people we were in we could feel it glaring right at us. Luckily, some poor sucker walked in front of us and the Cassowary singled him out instead. Instead of our 1,2 combination he opted for the pretend to be as big as possible routine. He stretched out and gave the bird a few hip checks. Eventually, it grew tired of him and left him alone. What did we do during this face off you ask? Well, what any other tourist would have done...tried to snap a couple of

We then headed south to discover that many of the towns had little to offer us. We did however stop in Airlie Beach to party with some local travellers before continuing on. We also stopped in Bundaberg to tour the rum distillery. (Bundaberg rum is the equivalent of Captain Morgans in the states, except it's cane rum and tastes better.) After stopping for a quick buzz we headed further south to try to get out of the rainy weather and find some surfboards. We ended up in Surfer's Paradise where we stopped for few days to partake in the local festivities and where a bisexual women, who oddly enough resembled "The Gatekeeper," tried to lure Russ back to her den. After shaking her, we ended up buying some boards and driving back up north to the sunshine coast to catch some waves. That's where we sit right now. In a day or two we will head into Brisbane and celebrate the 4th of July.
Well that is about all for now, there should be

To give you a clear picture of what these creatures look like. some more exciting adventures to come. For those of you haven't heard, we just found out that in a few short months our group will be doubling as the rest of the PB Crew has opted to go on a job hiatus as well to travel South East Asia. HEEYYOO!!! Well, until next time...See ya!
