Famous for the Tree of Knowledge, and as everyone knows was poisoned and is now dead. It is situated in front of the railway station. In 1891 the Great Shearers Strike was under way and their meetings were held under the tree. Also in the early days it served as the main meeting place for t6he twonspeople and was known as the Alleluia Tree because the Salvation Army used to meet under its leafy boughs. The main street of Barcaldine has five hotels, a couple of them I have photographed.
The next town that we passed through before Longreach is Ilfracombe. The locals describe the entry to the town as "the Great Machinery Mile" as it has an amazing lineup of historic machinery for more than a kilometre along the side of the highway, some photos of which Don has taken.
