June 9th is an Australian holiday recognizing the Queen's Birthday - We aren't actually sure of the significance, since her real birthday seems to be in April, but regardless, it means that it's a three day weekend. To take full advantage of the Royal weekend, we decided to take off an additional two days for our first extensive vacation. We flew on Friday morning from Sydney to Coolangatta Airport, which is in Queensland's Gold Coast (Very South Shore of Queensland bordering New South Wales). From Coolangatta we drove north heading towards Surfers Paradise, Broad Beach, and Mainbeach, which are the heart of the Gold Coast. On the way is Burleigh Heads, a beautiful headland where we stopped for a quick hike. We got a good view of the coast looking north and then set back out ... read more

Australia Day this year fell on a Saturday, So being the greedy Australians we are, we still get to have the "holiday" on a weekday (so we can have a day off work). This turned this years Australia day into a 3 day long weekend. With school starting up on Tuesday, monday was the end of holidays. We had a beach day planned with my husbands wonderful young adult group. It has rained nearly all summer holiday - amazing for a place in a drought, so it was fitting that the last days of holidays were hot and sunny. Once they were in the water, it was impossible to get them out! Miss 4 is a total water baby and was almost body surfing. The water was very choppy and there was a definate rip pulling ... read more

Torn apart for the first time, Flip being bought for three stones and witnessed by the eight, at midnight 12th Jan 2008. Flip and Flop made a pact to reunite some day, and this will be a journal of their separate adventures. Where will they go? What will they do? Will they reunite someday? How will they do it? And will those three stones also have their own adventure? Who is the greater Flip or Flop? These and many other questions may or may not get solved, and may take many years to find out. Great journeys like these are rare and this will be chance to share in Flips and Flops adventures. ... read more

After Howard's graduation, my aunt and uncle flew back to Sydney. My parents, cousin, and I rented a car and drove to Gold Coast. Gold Coast is known for its long continuous beach and golden sand. There sand is actually softer than ours. My cousin and I decided to book a tour in Gold Coast. It was with Adventure Ducks. They have large buses that can transport people on land and water. We didn't tell my parents this because we wanted it to be a surprise. When we arrived to the bus, my mom commented on the bus telling me that it looks weird. I had my camera ready to catch their reaction when we went on the water. Before we headed for the water, you could see my parent questioning whether the vehicle would actually ... read more

Hello everyone! We’ve been getting swarms of emails from everyone wondering where we are and what we’ve been doing. So, we sat down, had a big sigh and here we are writing this blog for YOU! So enjoy! We left off at Bali, where we had just come back to Kuta from paradising out on the Gili Islands. We spent the last days of Bali touring the quaint art town of Ubud, that comes with an adventure at a monkey sanctuary. Funny story, Bella got molested by a monkey and Kris got peed on. The boys (Kris and Adam) also tried their skills out on the surfs in Dreamland—which is beautiful, while Izabela and Jenna caught some rays on the white sandy beach. We also gave Waterbom (the waterslide park) another go, this time with ... read more

Today we eventually managed to leave the comforts of Brisbane behind, and trundle on in our mini home. I had to do all the driving today as Alex is still struggling with his bad cold. He is freaking about 'missing some point break gold' as he put it, as he is not well enough yet to get in the 'cold' water. We braved the high rise of Surfers Paradise after a brief stop at 'the spit', the northern most point on the gold coast. It is an urban monstrosity of high-rise apartments, yet the beach remains beautiful with clean, fine, white sand. The sand squeaks as you scuff your toes through it! It was slightly overcast, so after a walk along the beach, we headed back to the van and moved on, driving past Miami, ... read more

Why did I get up at 6am to watch the football? We were dreadful. Went on the beach again today but there were loads of annoying teenagers there so it was hard to relax. It even started raining so we headed back to our hostel earlier than planned. Had a few beers in the evening in the hostel pub. I must say this hostel is really well setup with the bbq outside and the pub joining onto it. (It's called City Backpackers and is on Upper Roma Street)... read more

Today we went down to the gold coast. We were warned away from surfers paradise as it was the Aussie equivalent of helf-term and it would have been full of spotty screaming teenagers (apparently 60 kids had been arrested there the previous day). Instead we got the train from Roma street down to Robina. This took just over an hour (the trains seem to go slower than the UK which I didn't think was physically possible). From Robina ou can get a 20 minute bus ride to Burleigh heads. This is the next bay down from Surfers Paradise I think but is a bit quieter (in terms of night life) The center of the town has a bowls club for example. It is a really nice place to spend time relaxing though and thats what we ... read more
