Absolutely breathtaking views. The cliffs as well can take your breath away because they are so scary. To all subscribers and viewers,
This trip was quite interesting. Fraser Island for those of you who don't know is the worlds largest sand island. That means that the entire thing is made of sand. Quite spectacular once you see that there is a rainforest growing right out of the sand and that the sand dunes are enourmous. The highlights of the island are that it has some of the most amazing lakes in the world. These lakes have white beaches and crystal clear waters.
The camping trip I went on to Fraser consisted of myself, 8 girls, a four wheel drive vehicle, camping gear, food to cook and our passion for adventure. At least I brought along my passion for adventure. I can't say the same for all the girls at my camp. We had a bit of rain on the 3 day 2 night stay on Fraser and it became quite difficult to motivated some of my travel partners. Of course, rain or shine, I was up for anything and had a fantastic time from start to finish.
I shared a tent with 4 other girls, two of which were Korean and spoke no english. They
The Girls and Me
After 5pm it got dark. The rest of the night was always spent around the dinner table playing games and telling stories, just having a good laugh. also had really strange hours which they chose to go to sleep. In addition, they chose to place their sleeping bags right in front of the tent entrance so I was constantly playing a game of try and get into the tent without waking the Koreans. Lets just say that I got better with time. The company that I booked my trip with had a really nice feature called "Base Camp". This meant that there was a little kitchen and bathroom area in the middle of the island that was covered and had electricity. We set up our tents there and had full access to bathroom and kitchen. I could have done without either of those two but they were nice to have when it was raining on us. The other great thing about base camp was that there were other groups of travellers that were using the same camp which meant that I got to interact with other people beyond my own group. This was a blessing because there was only so much I could handle from 8 girls.
The first day on the island was rather rushed. We arrived at about noon to the island and set
Maheno Wreck
Wish I had some history on this ship wreck to give you but I don't. off in our truck. Now because we drive on the beach in our vehicle and you are not supposed to drive in the salt water you can only be out during low tide. This meant that we had until 3pm to get to our camp site and at that point we were pretty much stuck there until morning. This gave us enough time to go see lake Wabby on day one. I was so disappointed because all we had time enough to do was go to a lookout and see the lake, there was no jumping in for a quick dip. Beautiful nonetheless. I got my first go at drive the truck on the beaches after Lake Wabby and it was so much fun. Flying up the beach at 80km/hr, sliding all over the place. We arrived at base camp and had the task of putting up our tents. The girls were great. They got their hands dirty and pretty much did all the work. Of course I helped out, but was not left to do the whole job by myself.
That first night the girls all went to bed very early. We had a long day starting at
Pinnacles
Remember, the entire island is sand. Look at these cliffs. Really amazing colors with all the oranges, reds and yellows. 6am. We had gone through about 4 hours of briefing before being let out to go to the island. They had to tell us all about what to do and what not to do. For example, don't feed the Dingo's (Wild Dogs) and be very carefull around them because they are vicious beasts that killed a person about 4 years ago. A bit more scary that the northern california moutain lions. So now the girls are in bed and I'm not ready to call it a night. So I stayed up late with the other group at base camp playing really fun games and having a memorable night.
Day two was quite full. We were up early to maximize the driving time on the beaches. We went to indian head which is one of two spots on the island that actually have rocks. Amazing views from up there. We stayed for about an hour and I really enjoyed just finding my own space to take in the sights. From there it was up to the champange pools. These were a collection of rock pools that had ocean water which comes crashed over the rocks in them. The name comes
My Truck
Picture me behind the wheel of this buggy. Of course I'll be on the right side of the truck attempting to shift a manual transmission with my left hand. from the fact that when the waves crash over the rocks the pools have white foam that covers lem, just like the bubbling effect of champange. At the pools I got to take my first swim on the Island. Cold but refreshing. As a side note, you can't swim in the ocean on Fraser because there are Tiger Sharks all along the coast that will eat you. So I had to wait until we arrived at the pools to have swim. Well worth the wait. The day ended by going to a quiet lake where we had another swim and saw heaps of turtles.
On our last day we visited several places. A shipwreck, the pinnacles (sand cliffs with outrageous color), Eli Creek, Lake McKenzie, and Lake Berribean. An eventful day that was accompanied by so much rain I was shocked. From the momment we began to break down our tents, until we left the island it was non stop rain. That didn't stop me from swimming in each lake and taking in the sights.
Fraser Island was a real challenge. I really loved the group of girls I was with but it was hard to find the
A dingo ate my baby
With so much talk of Digno's before we went I was sure we would see heaps of them. In fact we saw just one. Here he is from the safety of our truck. Out looking for food on the beach. Sorry its not closer. alone time that I needed. I survived and came away with some new friends and loads of good memories. The pictures, should I ever figure out how to upload them, are really great. If you want to get an idea of what I saw just google Fraser Island. Bottom line is that I survived the camping trip despite the dingo we saw, the 8 girls i was with, the near accident we had in the Truck (I was the driver), and the constant rain on day three.
Cheers to all
