We arrived in Hervey Bay on Wednesday to start our Fraser Island trip on Thursday. Before we headed over to the island we met up with the rest of the group we would be there with for a briefing and to organise our food for the trip. On thursday we were up early to be ready for the 8:30am barge over to the island. In total there was 13 of us going on the tour including our guide so we loaded up our vehicles and headed over to the island. The tour was a self drive trip so there was two 4x4 trucks and the guide up front leading the way. Andy took the opportunity to do the first bit of driving as he was the only guy in our vehicle that was able to drive. Once onto the island the roads were just sand tracks which made it really fun to drive on.
First stop on the island was a quick walk around Central Station which was used as a logging base where we saw some interesting wild life. Then we headed straight to Lake McKenzie which was really impressive. The fresh water was really clear and refreshing after
being used to salt water. After relaxing at the lake we headed to our camp site to unload some of our kit and have lunch. In the afternoon we headed over to Lake Wabby. To get there we left the trucks on the beach and walked into the bush until it opened up into a huge sand dune which used to be a river bed. The lake was hidden away in a valley that lay between the sand dunes and the edge of the bush. The water was really green here and contained loads of black cat fish and some turtles. After cooling off in the lake we headed back to camp for some bbq, fishing and some drinking games.
The island is home to a large number of dingoes which started to come and sniff around our camp at night so it was good to see them up close and the stars were also really bright.
The next day we headed up the beach for nearly 80km with Laura behind the wheel!! We headed up to see Indian Head where we saw another turtle in the sea, The Champagne Pools where the rocks around a small cove
create a jaccuzi like effect with the waves and the ship wreck of the Maheno. Then on the way back we ended the day at Eli Creek to wash the salt water in the river.
On our final day we drove around the southern part of the island to visit 3 different lakes. Lake Boomajin, Lake Birrabeen and Lake McKenzie again. They were all really different and it was hard to believe how big they and the island as a whole was. After our final stop we headed back to the Barge to leave the island and head back to Hervey Bay. At the end of the trip we all met up again to try out some Aussie Fish and Chips which were pretty good...but you cant beat good old English Fish and Chips!!!
The trip was really good, we couldn't believe how much there was to see and do and we'd really recommend it to anyone coming over here!!
