Days 112 - 116
Jumped onboard the fun bus and 3 hours later got to Rainbow Beach. It's a really cute little town. We had a briefing about our Fraser Island trip tomorrow and got assigned to our group (there are 10 people per group). In the evening we ate out in a yummy little cafe and had packed our small bags for our trip tomorrow.
Up bright and early for free pancakes and then we packed up the 4x4 that would be ours for the next 3 days. We headed off and caught a barge to the island, which was about a 20 minute ride away. After we landed on Fraster Island, we drove along the beach and through some rainforest before we parked up and had lunch. We then walked down a little pathway and there was this amazing lake with white sand and clear blue water - we had arrived at Lake McKenzie. It was stunning. We had a swim and then jumped back in the 4x4 to look for somewhere to set up camp for the night along the beach. We eventually agreed on a spot and set up camp. Then the rain came! And
didn't go! We were half way through cooking dinner and had to put up a make-shift shelter. The rain didn't stop the dingos however and we spotted a couple sniffing around near our camp, eyeing us up! Luckily they didn't venture too close so we were ok! Everyone was pretty grumpy after the rain so we all had an early night.
We were up before the crack of dawn to watch the sun rise over the sea, only the sky was filled with clouds and you couldn't even see the sun!! So we went back to sleep for all of an hour then packed up the car and drove down the beach to a spot called Eli Creek. We walked up a boardwalk to the top of the creek and then walked down stream through the creek back to the beach. I'm sure if it was baking hot it would have been gorgeous but in the gloomy clouds and early hour we didn't see it at it's best! We then jumped back into the 4x4 and drove up the beach to the most northerly point you could reach by 4x4 - Indian Head. We climbed up to the top
to look out over the sea and the island. We then started walking to the champagne pools but got half way and the heavens opened! It poured down like nothing we'd ever seen. We were drenched! We hiked it back to the car and drove along to a spot to dry off and have lunch. The rain was kind enough to stop while we ate our lunch, we sat there for a while waiting for the high tide to go out before we jumped back in the car to look for the night's camp spot! Determined not to get caught out again we set up camp early and made a fantastic shelter. We cracked open a couple of beers and all sat around chatting. We had dinner and some more beers - it felt like midnight but when we looked at our watch it was only 7.30!!
Yet another early one followed by a BIG breakfast - we had loads of food left so we cooked up everything! First we headed to 'The Pinnacles' - naturally formed piramids but unfortunately the walk there was closed so it was just a case of looking at them then shooting off! We
drove to a spot called Lake Wabi, again a random lake in the middle of the forest! We walked about 2km through woodland and suddenly there was a mound of sand, once we emerged from the forest we saw a massive sand dune and at the bottom was another gorgeous lake. We had a swim and Stuart enjoyed the little fishes nibbling his dead skin on his feet! The lake was also home to some catfish that swam around us! Very random! We left Lake Wabi and headed to the barge which we caught back to the mainland. We checked in and luckily there was no damage to the car and everything was present and correct. We had a much needed long, hot shower and chilled out. In the evening we had a few drinks and played pool with our new mates.
We were picked up at 10 to go dolphin kayaking. We were paddling around for about 2 hours in the channel between Rainbow Beach and Fraser Island but didn't see a thing other than water! We still had a good time though as the weather was gorgeous and it was nice and relaxing. In the evening we
Carlo Sand Blow
Carly about to do something truely amazing!! Double back flips, the works. If only my camera work was better. went up to Carlo Sand Blow - another random dune in the middle of town - to watch the sunset. It was really pretty, with different coloured sands and a view of Fraser Island. We walked back down in the dark and had dinner at a really nice cafe.
