Rainbow Beach
The boys on a massive sand dune With the rain well behind us we arrived back in Hervey Bay after 3 awesome, though exhausting days on Fraser Island. Here is our story...
After having to delay our trip for a day while the damage from 2 cyclones that hit the island was cleared up, we woke bright and early to meet our group, load up our stuff and collect our 4x4. Our group consisted of an Irish bloke, a German lad, 6 German girls and us three. The only eligible drivers were Dave and Mark, so, between them they would spend the next 3 days chauffeuring the group around some tough off road terrain and beaches. Some of the girls didn't have complete trust in this and requested to sit in the front to make sure the boys didn't play too hard with their new toy! First stop once landed on the island was lake McKenzie, a lovely fresh water lake with a white sandy beach where we took a refreshing dip. Some bumpy Island tracks took us to for a lovely drive up the beach later that day to where we would camp. We cooked dinner and drank plenty of goon (ridiculously cheap boxed wine) and
Lake McKenzie
The boys at Lake McKenzie watched a rare lunar eclipse type thing where the moon went dark pink, something to do with Mars (the next one is in 280 years apparently!). After more goon, some team bonding and a brief encounter with the local Dingos, we hit the hay ready for our early start the next day.
We were awoken at 5 am on the dot by the uber efficient German girls (It is no myth). We had a strict schedule to follow! We headed in the jeep further down the beach to a lookout and a place called champagne rocks (a name given due to the white cascading water made by waves on the rocks). We spent another night on the beach that day and more bonding sessions took place with the aid of the goon.
The final day included a great off road drive and finished up on a high by visiting lake Wabbi, a fresh water lake surrounded by huge, steep sand dunes. This was a great place to catch a few rays and lark about before our ferry back to the mainland.
Much fun was had and the group was great fun, all will be missed! This was
