Surely by now you'd have thought we'd seen enough, well your dead wrong there aren’t you! Our latest escapade was to a place called Frazer Island, named that way after a bloke called Captain Frazer who died on the place............I wont bore you with the history lesson, just with what we did that's all. Now this is not just any other island, but one of only a hand full of islands in the world which is a
sand island.............. that's right an island completely made from sand! How the hell do things live & grow in sand I hear all you horticulturist’s scream, well don’t ask us two as it went right over our heads, but believe me it does.
So we get picked up from our camp site and then driven to the ferry point to be whisked across the straights to start the adventure. I don’t use that word lightly, as it was a 4x4 adventure as that's the only way to travel on Frazer in a four wheeled drive vehicle, ours, a Hugh bus called the wedge packed with 25 other fun seekers,
"Let's go off road". So the journey starts with us driving through the
middle of the island whilst our tour guide tells us all about the huge variety of plant life and trees (interesting at the time I promise), what he forgot to tell us was that if you had a large breakfast, you would be seeing it soon as the bus bumps, jumps and thumps up and down as it makes it’s way along the sand track's.
The first point of interest was a short walk though a type of rain forest which ran along the rough of Ely creek. All very nice, but when you take a look into the creek it looks like it has a layer of sandy scum floating on it, as it turns out from our handy guide it's not a layer of scum were looking at, but the bottom of the creek. The water is so pure that you see right through it to the bottom. He then asks us all to close our eye's (pick pocket opportunity I thought) and listen.........you couldn’t hear the water, it was silent, you really had to be there to truly appreciate it.
Next up was lunch, cold buffet, so I’ll leave it at that, we then roar onto
the beach in the wedge and fly down it at 80kpm feeling every grain of sand as were treated to another bouncy experience. As were cruising along the beach all of a sudden one of the passages shouts out
"WHALES" and directly to our left in the ocean are two hump backed whales swimming just a few hundred meters off the coast, word's cant describe let me tell you, but it doesn’t stop there. So as we headed to a rocky out crop, which again is sand but compressed over trillions of years called Indian heads we are helped to another large portion of whale watching as another big fella decides to show off and lurch right out of the water and splash down in a Hugh belly flop. This happened at least 5 or 6 times and it takes your breath away.
So when we reach Indian head, we climb to the top, look out at more whales, then as we look down into the waters far below, you can make out the shape of two massive sting ray's and a manta ray just gently swimming around. Now by now your all thinking come on Brian, we know
how you like to use artistic license, but I kid you not, this all really happened, ask lynds if you don’t believe me!!!
We then make a move to another place on the coast called Champaign pools, unfortunately now booze on offer just another spectacular natural occurrence where the rocks have formed two big pools of sea water which fills up daily on high tide leaving them full of fish which you can swim with.
To end the day we head back to our resort for the night, but first stop off at a ship wreck called the Meehan. Has been rotting away for the last 70 years and I'll let the pictures describe this one.
Day two was a little more relaxed, planned was to chill our at two natural lakes, Wabby & McKenzie. Well I thought it was going to be relaxed until we had to walk 1.8k (not far I know) over a sand blow, a little like hiking the Sahara dessert. This lake is just sat there in the middle of two Hugh sand dunes, really bizarre, but cool none the less. After an hour or so, we do lunch (a hot buffet
this time) then move on to McKenzie, this again is sat in the middle of a sand dune, but so clean & clear it reflects the sky, and on this day it was a beautiful deep blue color. So after chilling out at these two lakes it was time to go home, but not after seeing a few dingo's and the opportunity to walk through another creek which topped it all off.
