From Rainbow beach we made another bus journey to Hervey Bay, the jump point to Fraser Island. Hervey Bay itself isn't a very interesting town and on arrival I thought it seemed quite American as when you enter your just on a massive road lined with big shops and takeaways. The hostel we stayed in was luckily away from this area and right next to the beach!! it was really quite nice and we discovered our first outside gym!!! they just have these little stops all down the street with press benches, steppers, cross-trainers, allsorts! It is a really good idea to keep a country fit, although I dont think it could really be transferred to England, we'd need it under marquees and probably surrounded by locked down.
On our first day in Hervey Bay we had a briefing for the trip got sorted into our groups and given a group shopping list. The shopping was rather amusing, imagine 10 people in a small supermarket trying to buy food for three days! Luckily the group of people we had in the group were pretty laid back so it got sorted without a full on brawl in the aisles.
The following day we got up rather early and went to set up the 4x4! Few attempts later and we had a tightly packed vehicle of tents, food, cooking equipment and 10 people! We got given a map and they just sent us on our way, I did find it a bit bizzare that they're quite happy to send 10 18+ people out onto an island with no real guidance at all except your itinerary in a massive 4x4! Saying that we managed to make it to the ferry and the island with the other 5 groups without any problems! On our arrival we simply followed the itinery and the map they gave us, it was pretty cool just coming off the ferry right into sand tracks that take you around the island and we were all pretty excited about the trip ahead. First stop gave us a sample of the beauty to come! I've never seen anything like it, white sands blue water surrounded by lush forrest and blue skies! it was pretty deserted, the only people on it being us and the other groups. We had a dip, sunbathed then moved on to the other sites of the
day which involved a fresh water creek, the 75 mile beach, the Maheno shipwreck, and I think another lake that was completely different to the first one but still really nice views! I got to drive the 4x4 on the beach which was really cool, so bumpy and a little bit scary when you've got 9 other back seat drivers but its probably the best cruising around that I've done so far! That evening we found our suggested spot on the beach and set up camp! we had a chef cook our food and generally sat around, consumed the suggested goon (disgusting cheap wine that comes in a box) and stare at the milkyway. This was an awesome experience as you get to wake up with sunrise over the ocean, however, you do have to survive without a shower and proper toilets for 3 days!
For the other 2 days we shared the driving around the island and saw the other sites on the itinerary. The main places were so varied! we had Indian Heads where we got up to a really high viewpoint over the sea, possibly saw some sharks and stingrays! the sea was so clear here
and the view was amazing! There was the champagne pools which are rocky areas next to the sea and I think when tide is higher as the sea crashes it fizzes up the water, quite cool although I dont think we experienced the best fizzing at the time 😞 We went to Lake Wabby which was the greenest lake I've seen and a pretty steep sand dune leading into it. Finally we had Lake Mackensie which is the main viewpoint of the island and it was really pretty! More white sands and a clear blue lake, the only unfortunate thing about it was the amount of people that were on the beach at the time.
Overall I think Fraser Island is one of my favourite places so far, it just had such varied sights to see and it was all quite breathtaking! The 4x4 driving around sand for 3 days was pretty cool too!
Anyway I think I've written another nice long essay to keep you all occupied for a while! Hope your all well!!!!!! xx
