We went to the Australian Zoo..home of the Crocodile Hunter...most of the day today. It was a blast! It had mostly Australian animals, and almost all of their snakes were posinous. Scary! We got to go into the cages with the kangaroos and pet and feed them. We also got to pet a couple of koalas. I really liked this zoo better than the ones I've been to in America because it seemed like the zoo keepers tried to keep the guests more involved with the animals. There were shows and feedings going on all the time.... read more

We left Byron Bay, feeling at one with the surf and mother earth, only to be smacked in the face by the high-rise sight for sore eyes that is the Gold Coast. Who on earth let that happen? Surfer's Paradise it might once have been, but surely no self-respecting surfer REALLY thinks thinks that paradise is set in concrete 50 floors high? Surfer's.. cough.. Paradise must float some people's boats as it, together with the 35 km strip that makes up the Gold Coast, has reportedly over 2 million visitors a year. Not all coming to surf I bet... If you like theme parks, casinos, and shopping malls BIG TIME then you'd be delighted if, on completing the Gold Run on Blockbusters-can-I-have-a-'P'-please-Bob' you'd won a fortnight's 'trip of a lifetime' here. Maybe you've just got to ... read more

The plan for the day was to go to the Australian Zoo. That is the zoo which Steve "The Crocodile Hunter" Irwin and his parents own. The zoo is located in Beerwah, about an hour an a half on the train dead north of here in the middle of the Sunshine Coast. We caught a train at the transit centre about 500 metres from the hostel. The ticket cost us each 12.60 with the return and a bus from the end of the line to the entrance of the zoo included. We reached the zoo at about 945 and were told that right away there was a very popular exhibition which used to be done by Steve Irwin himself. The performance took place in a small ... read more

Went to Australia Zoo at the weekend. I'd been wanting to go for a while but always seemed to end up doing something else. It's not to far from the city, about 40 minutes north of Brisbane on the Bruce Highway. Didn't get their till about 2 pm so unfortunately I missed a few of the shows including the Crocodile show. Have to get back later on in the year. Was hoping to see somebody from the TV series but didn't see anyone I recognized. Also wanted to get some khaki shorts and shirt but they were sold out in most sizes due to Steve Irwin day last November. Anyway see what you reckon to the pictures. Tara for now.... read more

This was another of our must do's, when we first started talking about going to Oz. We wanted to see Steve Irwin the crocodile hunter in action - But as you all know he is no longer with us. This did not deter us... There was a need to get close up and personal with a few animals, particually a wombat which neither of us have ever seen. And one burning question to be answered "Why was our koala bear brown"? So here we were travelling along Steve Irwin Way, heading for Australia Zoo. Needless to say we weren't disappointed. "Skim" was over joyed to get a close up of a kookaburra and finally see a wombat. (It looked like an over grown guinea pig to me) And the icing on the cake was to ... read more

After Fraser Island it was lovely to stay at Sonia and Gregs for a few days. Sonia used to work for Toms mum a few years back and she moved out here and hasn't been home since! They live in a small town called Landsborough which is about 5 minutes from Australia Zoo. When we arrived we had a few drinks and food, but I was shattered after Fraser Island and was really looking forward to a nice comfy bed so we had an early night. The next day we had a lovely breakfast on the BBQ - this is the life! We had to go to the medical centre so that Tom could get his ears sorted out and then we went to Australia Zoo. The weather was perfect and we saw so many animals ... read more

Ahoy over there! First of all for those waiting with baited breath for the latest installments of my crazy rock and roll happenings I apologise for the lack of updates. Anyway, was a bank holiday the weekend in honour of her majesty's birthday so thought I'd do something productive with the weekend. Friday started with a trip to the tivoli in Brisbane to see that well known band Cog (big out here), pretty good and the venue was a bit if a change from the norm. Non-sticky floors (clean carpet), small bar queues, no smoky atmosphere and a general ease of moving about the place which was most unnatural. Didn't quite feel right. After spending Saturday recovering from Friday, on Sunday I took a trip up to the Glasshouse Mountains to conquer the mighty Mount ... read more

11/12/06 - 14/12/06 One of the standard tourist stops on Australia’s east coast is Fraser Island. It’s the largest sand island in the world and heritage listed. We stayed in Hervey Bay and took the early ferry over for a day tour, managing to spot a couple of dolphins off the back of the boat as crossed Platypus Bay. Seat belts on the 4WD bus were essential as the bus bounced along on the sandy tracks, crossing the island. The 75-mile beach on the east coast of the island is a national highway as well as an airstrip. We passed Eli creek where 4 million liters of fresh water an hour rushes out into the sea. Supposedly the aquifer fresh water system within the island holds 20 times more water than Sydney Harbour! Ironically, Cook passed ... read more

Hello Claire and I got up early on Saturday morning and decided to brave the two hour train journey to go and see Australia Zoo, 'Home of the Crocidile Hunter' Steve Irwin. After the long and draining train journey we made inside just in time to catch the first big show of the day, the snake show. On show were a variety of snakes from all round the world and we were given information about what to do if we got bitten. Then came the bird show where they have exotic birds swooping low over your head, which was pretty cool. Then the big one the croc show, the croc wasn't that hungry it would seem and it took a while for the handlers to get him to bite. When he did bite, he caught the ... read more
