We are now arrived in Cairns 7 hours North of Airlie Beach and the last destination on the east coast before we drive to Alice Springs and Uluru (Ayers Rock) Planning to spend at least two weeks here to catch our breath before the monster drive ahead.
Photos attached are of a two day boat trip from Airlie beach out to The Whitsunday Islands in the Centre of the Barrier reef. Needless to say they were extremely beautiful (Pictures of the beach below are of Whitehaven which is listed as one of the top five beaches in the world as the sand is pure silica - Imagine something approaching the texture of White Flour and your almost there) Boat trip was lots of fun and Paul had a snorkel over the reef. Sunsets were very spectacular (I know i keep going on about the sunsets but they really are something else)
Went swimming off of Whitehaven in our stinger suits (very unattractive lightweight wetsuits), the scene put in mind of a scene from Happy Feet as we waddled to the water. Unfortunately the suits smelt as if their previous occupants had died in them and had been consumed and spat
out by a very big fish with extreme halitosis so once we had established that the water was free from any nasty jellyfish, we discarded said suits and enjoyed swimming around in togs (very brave I thought!)
Only one more downside to the boat was asking two guys (one 6'2") to sleep comfortably in a 5X5 bunk (along with their luggage for the two days!) Needless to say that sleep wasn't very forthcoming but that was a small price to pay for the experience which was very beautiful
Back on dry land after day two we headed straight to our tent for a good nights sleep (yes I was actually looking forward to getting to the tent!) and woke early the next morning for the drive north to Cairns.
Love to all
