our group 2
we taught them that pose once again hello and welcome to the journal that has got everyone talking, mainly about my appalling grammar and shocking photo quality but still its good to have the attention. i assure you all that the photo quality will be exemplary and you will all be glad especially when you see the photos i have put up. gentlemen especially will appreciate the stunning views we managed to obtain on Fraser island. at the moment i am in writing my final blog from oz as tomorrow me josh and gaz board our flight to NZ and begin our adventure on the other side of the ditch as its known. so im here to give you all the lowdown on my last adventures in oz before i depart to new shores.
as mentioned we had booked ourselves onto a Fraser island camping trip and after a lenghty bus journey up to Hervey Bay we were introduced to our camping buddies for our adventure on Fraser. they were Chris a brit from Devon, Min from Korea whose favourite football player was Rayne Wooney and five 19yr old swedish girls so as you can imagine a fun group.
We got the ferry across to the
Team Sweden
no words needed island the next day and it was down to Gary myself and Josh to tackle the majority of the driving as being the experts on cars that we claimed to be we were the trusted ones. that of course didnt stop us getting stuck in the sand a few times and needing to push ourselves out. it culminated with one morning when we left our campsite late and faced a desperate race along the beach with the incoming tide fast approaching, we just about made it and with the waves lapping at the tyres we reached the point of safety. as those of you who have ever travelled to Fraser will know it is just one massive sand island and the time we spent the time there driving to the various inland lakes and scenic spots that you can stop at to chill out and relax with a beer. in the evenings we all pulled up at the base camp for bbq's and a healthy amount of drinking. as with most of these tours there only good if you get a good group and luckily for us our 4x4 team were all up for a good laugh and my Korean
our trusty vehicle
the mighty toyota troop carrier that saw us through the good times and the bad and Swedish vocvabulary has improved no end. sadly the only language we managed to pass on to the others was a few football chants and words to 'Rabbit Rabbit' by Chas and Dave. a crackin time was had by all and it was a shame that the tour is over so quickly and before we knew it we were on the ferry back and getting an overnight 12hour bus to Airlie beach and our sailing adventure in the Whitsundays
as im sure you can all imagine me and long bus journeys do not get on well, mainly due to my somewhat lanky frame and an inability to get comfortable in any position. this was made even better by the fact that Josh can sleep anywhere anytime and when he snores it sounds like Tom Jones gargling with gravel. so after a delightful journey we rocked up in Airlie beach and went straight to the dock as we were sailing that afternoon on the fantastically named Condor a 28 metre maxi racing yacht that has won every sailing race under the sun, my anticipation was of a few days hammering it around the island at 30 knots with the waves whipping
our trusty driver
would that inspire you with confidence? at our bow. Magic.
Sadly in order to do the above racing you need one crucial elemenmt. Wind. instead we had 36 degree heat and not a breath of wind. Bugger.
even without this we still had a good couple of days motoring round the islands with plenty of opportunities to snorkel and vielw the variety of marine life on the reefes around the island. so even though we werent technically sailing and had to sllep in a space the lenght of one of my legs it was still a good laugh. upon arriving back in Airlie we decided to hire ourselves a car and drive the 2000km back to Sydney in order to see a bit more of the coast before our departure.
So our epic roadtrip over the last few days has included highlights such as eating a 500gm steak the size of a toilet seat in a town dubbed the 'beef capital of Oz', us three driving in 3 hour shifts for 17 staright hours thru the night because we didnt want to waste any money on accomodation for the night. that last one was a particular smart idea that we are all still proud of. the
boys on the boat
wot a pair of idiots benefit of that sacrifice was that we had an extra night in Byron bay that we spent drinking goon (thats wine in a box for those of you not in the know) and playing drinking games with a motley mix of Danes, italians and english in our hostel
Despite all of that we did finally make it into Sydney for our last few days. so after all the adventures and excitements of the last 5 months it is with a tear in my eye and a sharp stabbing pain in my liver that i bid farewell to Oz and set my sight on Nz and i can only imagine the fun and chaos that wew can cause over there
So its goodbye from me for now and the next time you hear from me will be in Nz
Bring it on.
