KINGS CREEK SOUTH CAMPKINGS CREEK SOUTH CAMPKINGS CREEK SOUTH CAMP

Sunset at our camp south of Katherine
Sorry to leave Lake Argyle as it was such a relaxing and lovely park. Were going to have 2 days between Lake Argyle and Katherine but realised timing to stock up on grog wasn't going to work, so many rules, times, regulations and days they don't sell grog arggghhh, so had one night on the road at a lovely bush camp at Dingo Creek Lagoon just between Timber Creek and Gregory there ended up being just four vans which was nice! The scenery between Timber Creek and Gregory and surrounds was just lovely! Then into Katherine to stock up with groceries as they have a good Woolworths and BWS and Cellarbrations, fuelled up and got out of there! They have POLICE (what a waste of resources) manning the bottle shops getting your details etc as there is a quota to how much you can buy and that is recorded! It must be working? After all watered and stocked up we set out for King River East bush camp, about 45klms south of Katherine and about 50klm the other way to Mataranka, for the next night, we were all set up with about 8 vans there and the cops rolled up twice

that night, I guess to check all was well, hardly slept a wink that night! We had a text at 10am to say our site was ready at Mataranka so we took off and booked into the Territory Tudor Manor Motel and Caravan Park, a neat place just on the edge of town, we had heard both Bitter Springs and Mataranka Homestead were quite run down so thought they are pretty close to town to just do day visits. The owners were lovely people, ex farmers from Murray Bridge bought their DREAM three and a half years ago! Mataranka is no different to anywhere else with alcohol and problems there but we did feel quite safe there until we got talking to a guy in the pool and he had a girl (he thinks) knock on his door at 11pm and ask if he was alone and could she/he sleep there!!!! WT geez.....his wife was beside herself and he went outside and told the person to bugger off and he got quite angry, then they asked for cigarettes and alcohol so he became very angry and said ON YOUR WAY.....they said SETTLE DOWN BOSS!!!! We were all laughing so hard,

it was a funny story! He thought he should ring park owner Michael and let him know and Michael was down in a flash but by then they had scampered off! We had a great time here, food was great, beers were reasonably priced and a great atmosphere at happy hour with loads of patrons! We did walk up and have a look around town but the pub is not always open when there has been trouble and there was a sign out front no takeaway alcohol as per the Elders from the local area, so we were quite content with spending our nights at the park and sharing stories with other people there. Doing a couple of short stints with travels as wanting to check out all these iconic pubs along the way so next stop Larrimah the Pink Panther Pub. Larrimah Hotel is an interesting stop, very basic pub and surrounds but has a great atmosphere, happy hour 5-7pm, live music, small menu but great food! Larrimah was in the middle of a thriving World War II base, Gorrie Airbase just outside town, where there were 6,500 personnel stationed here and local indigenous people were all part of

The ranges and the mighty Victoria River
it keeping homes and barracks clean, cooks etc. There is a small museum here and it is very interesting. Next stop the iconic Daly Waters Pub, its a fantastic stop....now owned by Tim Carter and his family they have been here for six years, there is so much to look at the pub itself is a quirky, funny place then there is Tim's junk shed, hardly junk but full of old Holdens, fire engine, motor bikes galore, loads and loads of stuff to look at $3 entry and so worth it, reminds us of you Diddles! Tim last year has also bought the Adelaide River Hotel and is slowly giving it some much needed love. Tim is from Coober Pedy and has recently sold his IGA store there but still has the the Big Winch ..... its all a family affair and has a lot on his hands. They employ 45 staff just at Daly Waters during the season. Had their signature dinner which is the Barra and Beef BBQ, both the meats were just cooked perfect, served with a salad bar and damper, happy hour 4-6pm and a decent happy hour! Live music til 9pm with Tom Maxwell a

well known country performer.....it was a fabulous couple of days here! Further down the Stuart Highway we overnighted at Renner Springs Desert Hotel to break the journey down to Devils Marbles....a pretty impressive swimming pool but otherwise nothing out of the ordinary but it served its purpose! Next stop Devil's Marbles!
