SUNDAY, JANUARY 29
I woke up and got ready to watch us pull into Darwin. The sun had just risen and we could see the skyline off in the distance. Beautiful morning. Glenn and I ate breakfast up on Deck 12. We made our way to go off shore. I was thinking about an excursion, but we decided to just grab a taxi.
Once we got off the boat, we walked around the marina. I started getting a head ache. It was getting hot. Reminded me of the sweltering weather we had in Santa Cruz. Just so hot. We wanted to take a taxi to the wildlife park, but found that it was too far away. We did go into a 7-11 type store and Glenn used the ATM to get some Australian dollars. I also found a Bressler Magnum ice-cream bar. Yippee. We found a peppermint ice-cream. Delicious. We stood there inside the store to eat the ice cream, because as soon as we would go out, it would melt. I got some pictures.
We hailed down a taxi and asked for directions. Then we asked if he would give us a tour around Darwin - historical sights and stuff. The taxi driver had lived in Darwin all of his life. He drove us out to point where the Australians were defending their country from the Japanese attacks during WW 2. Apparently the Austrians had Chinese come in and build underground tunnels all under the city and towards the coast line so the Australians could hawl ammunition underground to help defeat the Japanese. We saw bullet holes where bombs and ammunition hit the fortress.
As we were driving back to the main city, I looked over to the left, and there was an Baptist Church, the congregation out in the yard, and there was a large swimming pool. Evidently there was a baptizm. I suggested that we end our "taxi tour" and get out. Glenn paid for the taxi and we proceeded on to the church grounds.
The church had just finished. Because it was summer, their 11am service was moved to the 9am service. We started talking with John and Jenny. John is Australian and Jenny is 30 years younger than him, from Indonesia. Quite a story. We had tea and coffee with them and learned about their journey to Christ. They introduced us to the pastor and assistant pastor. Although they
invited us into their home, we just asked that they drive us back to the mail mall area, so we could get some internet.
After arriving at the street mall, I found a store that sold a souvenir spoon, post card and magnet. We then parked our hot bodies at a table near a cafe that had internet service. I got on and did "triage". I got on FB and noticed that Jeff Berta was in the hospital, bleeding on the brain. I suggested that Glenn forward the email about Jeff from Bill Eubanks to Gary and to G'daddy.
As we were sitting there, I overheard a lady talk about CruiseCritic. I introduce myself. She and her husband are from the US, and have been on the NCL Star since 22 December. We talked about the problem, and she said that our passengers have been the most vocal about the compensation and stuff. Her name was Marla and Cory DeSoto. She even has a travelpod. http://travelpod.com/members/mdesoto
We then took the shuttle back to the boat and had lunch up on Deck 8. We sat next to the couple that were Eloy's party last night. And we talked about our plans for the
next week.
We rested in the afternoon.
