In Australia, parking lots are called Car Parks.
Monday morning we decided to check out of the YHA and move into another hostel. YHAs are usually some of the better places to stay in most cities, but the prices had gone up as of the first of May (for the dry season, which is tourist season), and it was getting pretty pricey to stay there. We found another hostel down the road called the Youth Shack. The rooms were actually a lot nicer, and with fewer people. The kitchen was also a lot bigger, whereas the YHA’s was tiny. All in all, it worked for the better to move out actually. Lol

As per tradition, we saw another movie on Tuesday. This time it was Wolverine: X-Men Origins. About time too, as we’d been waiting for this movie to come out for a long time. Impressions? It was ok. Plenty of action, but a few too many poses (or dramatic walkaways) with stuff blowing up in the background. Made plenty of money though. Haha

On Thursday, we went to the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets. Once May comes around, every Thursday and Sunday Darwin hosts an outdoor market by the beach just out of downtown. It’s a great

way to have dinner and shop for some little souvenirs. Half the stands were food, and the other half were mostly crafts. It was really quite big actually. We ended up spending the whole evening just looking around and by the end you get to enjoy your dinner on the beach with the sun setting right in front of you. When we got back to the hostel, they were showing Seven Years in Tibet (with Brad Pitt) in the lounge. Good movie. We really enjoyed it.

The rest of the week was spent still trying to find a job, and find an apartment. In the couple of weeks we’d been in Darwin, we had come to learn a few things about the area. One is that wages in Australia are higher than they are in Canada. But as we’d found out during our travels, the cost of living is higher too. Renting is done by the week. Whenever we checked the newspaper and saw a room for 400, we’d have to ask ourselves “Is that a really nice room by the week or a crap place for a month?”. Lol And people around here certainly like to drink and

gamble. It isn’t as obvious in the city, but in the suburbs the majority of neighbourhoods have a local shopping centre with a pub. And these pubs usually have slot machine (pokies) and take bets on horse/dog racing. I feel like I have seen Keno everywhere too. Haha

It may be a little bit tough to see in this picture, but "Down Under" the "man in the moon" is actually upside down. Guess it makes sense when you think about it.

Casuarina Shopping Centre. Decent size mall, but don't call it a mall while in Australia. A mall is considered an outdoor shopping street closed off for pedestrian use. This is a shopping centre.
