Well. Here we are. Not quite over, but nearly. We're having a drink and talking about not wanting to go home. We are just home from Mindil market and we watched another beautiful sunset from the beach there. The sun sets quickly here. A burnt orange orb that only lasts a few minutes. But the sky changes colours for some time afterwards.
The day began on quite a sour note. Ro's wallet and phone were stolen from the ledge of the tent overnight. He woke early and realised that his phone was missing, and then his wallet. He has been very particular about bringing the valuables inside the tent and keeping them next to him as he sleeps. The night that he doesn't do that is the night that a near-do-well is lurking. A good result though, after a few prayers. A man staying over the way saw Ro and I pacing and looking around the camp and he approached me and asked if I knew the man in the licence photo. I did. It was Ro. He had found the wallet and phone on the verandah of his cabin early this morning. All the money was gone (a good
deal too!), but all the cards, etc were in order and the phone was fine.
Bacon and eggs for breaky. Bags packed and campsite tidied.
The girls have been working on a show for some time now and we were invited to be in the audience this morning. The show involved a series of skits, songs and poems. My personal favourite was the final song about the 13 to 13 trip entitled "the 13th of September". The girls were all stars. Joe had a minimal role. Jack was in charge of videoing the event.
Mindil market was fab. It's set up on the foreshore of the beach and runs from 4pm until 9pm. There are food stalls galore. Not fresh produce, but wonderful cooked food for eating right then and there. I sampled fresh oysters and prawns; Japanese chicken and prawns; Singapore noodles; and one of Ruby's poffitjets. Ro had oysters, prawns, long-tom kebab, and a samosa. The kids had nachos. Mima had a massive crepe with strawberries. Joe had a strawberry milkshake. Ruby had corn on the cob and those poff-thingies with icing sugar. We caught up with the Hunts again and it was nice to
share a Darwin sunset with them. I had a great time shopping. The arts and crafts were lovely. Most of the stalls were different to one another and many artists were on hand. Got to chat with Kate Eagle, whose work I had seen during the week at an exhibition - bought several of her cards. There was quite a bit of Aboriginal art, some photography, leather goods, soaps and plenty of jewellery. Bought some lengths of beads and a beautiful purple pendant and a bracelet made out of coconut shell buttons. No quilting sadly.
Home for showers and a sleep for the kids before we head to the airport.
Thanks for reading the blog. It has been a great way of keeping the memories alive and a way of keeping in touch with home. Love to you all and see you when we're finally home, Jacqui xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Aaaah, its nearly over and i am very sad about it but have lots of memories and stories to share. Absolutely loved Mindil Markets, it was the perfect ending to a wonderful trip. Jack ate singapore noodles, fried rice, prawns, sorbet and licorice; emma a massive crepe with fresh
strawberries, sorbet and a licorice; Rob enjoyed oysters kilpatrick, prawns, a spring roll and sorbet and I had a yummy corn on the cob, magnificent japanese prawns and calimari. It was a foodies paradise. There was music, smells, sights and as Jac has already said, a majestic Darwin sunset, unfotunately our last. The kids had fun spending their bucks and have each bought some wonderful souvenirs of their trip. I enjoyed the shopping too, some jewelery, gifts and some of Kate Eagles cards too and some green ant wire critters. Rob survived the market, I'm sure he would have enjoyed it more if he could have enjoyed a beer too but alas it was not to be. It was lovely to be on a beach, sitting on the sand enjoying the moment, made me realise i miss our beaches at home, the ones we see daily; I won't be taking them for granted anymore.
Anyway, thats all folks. Rob Ro and kids are having a snooze and Jac and I blog. Hope you have enjoyed reading this as much as we have enjoyed writing. See you all soon. Bron😊 xxxxx
