Barkley Roadhouse
An old Rudge Motorcycle. Well we left Camooweal around 9am but not without incident. As Jim said we fuelled up at the BP before we left town. We had told the others we would meet them under the bridge just outside of town as we wanted to check out the free campsite there. After leaving the servo and proceeded towards the bridge when we got a call from Wayne on the two way saying he had got himself into a bit of a predicament, he had gone down a track and couldn’t turn around and his van is rather large, anyway Jim and Alan helped him out of that tight spot. Meanwhile I am sitting in our truck and a bloke pulled up beside me and said “Did you just get fuel from the BP”. I said “yes”. And he said “Well you didn’t pay for it”. I said “Well I did pay for it and I have the receipt for it here”. He had chased us down the road thinking we hadn’t paid (thank goodness for keeping receipts hey!) We drove back into town and Jim went in and had words with them, they said the girl on the checkout had made a mistake
Devil's Marbles
We even got Gaile to walk in close proximity to long grass. and said they were sorry. Well on we went we stopped and took a photo at the border crossing but only of Jim and I as the others were long gone by now we had a couple of stops on the way one was for lunch and one was, as Jim has said, for a breathalyser test. We arrived at Barkley Roadhouse at about 1am, Wayne had already checked us in we just needed to find a site we liked and set up. I caught up with some more washing and Jim started drawing in our trip on our wheel cover map, we had a quiet afternoon resting up, reading etc, then went to the pub for a drink. Jim and I had our dinner there (nothing to write home about though). The Barkley roadhouse is a great place - an oasis in the middle of absolutely nowhere.
We left early next morning and headed for the Stuart highway 200ks away, we turned left and shortly after that arrived at Tennant Creek not a lot to say about that except not a place to stay too long in. However there was a nice Café and Gallery on the edge
of town to have a bite to eat and a drink at. We left there after fuelling up again and headed for the Wauchope Hotel where we were going to stay the night but we got there a bit early so we just had a look around there checking it out for our trip back through there next week. Before we got to Wauchope we called into the Devils Marbles for a look and to take some photos it’s a fabulous place, and you can free camp there but gee you’d have to get there early as it was close to midday and most of the camp spots were taken. Well we left Wauchope and decided to stop the night at a place called Ti Tree O!!!!!!!! M!!!!!! G!!!!!!!! What a place it was surrounded in a high fence with barbed wire on the top and the gates are closed at nights it is the most central pub in Australia and the worst one we have seen so far, thank goodness we have our own toilets and showers - most places are pretty good though. Well we had grassy spots to set up on and we sat around for 5pm
Mr Peacock
Hand feeding peacock at Ti Tree. - beers and nuts then retired to our own vans for dinner and sleep. Wayne and Gaile left early the next morning to find some caravan repair people to get a few jobs done on their van. I have noticed since arriving in this part of the world that there seems to be a bit of segregation between the Aborigines and us white fellas. Most of the pubs only served them (the Aborigines) in certain corners of the pub or even just from outside through a window. Really a bit of an eye opener.
Well this will be the last Blog for a few days as we won’t have any Internet or phone service until next week, Jim will also start attaching some photos to each of the blogs we have done. Thanks for the comments - great to know we have some followers.
