The next day we had a beach day then made dinner. In the evening we went out with all the people from our hostel to Koala Bar and the Rolling Rock, it was a veryyyy drunken night. The next morning we were very hungover but had our first surf lesson to get to at 1. We were all struggling a bit at first but we got taught the basics and off we went. Me and Emily struggled to carry the surfboards to the sea but once we got there it was all good. I had a few attempts and it wasn't looking good but finally I managed to stand up!!!! I was sooooo excited and as surprised as everyone else- due to my lack of swimming skills. When we finished we were all starving so ordered pizza hut (3 large stuffed crust and 3 sides, it was amazing). Then we watched a lot of rubbish TV with two guys from our hostel, Ben and Ed.
On Friday we had to check out at 9.30 but we stayed in the hostel sunbathing all morning. Then Emily, Ed and I played ping pong for a few hours and invented a version where
you pretend to have arms like a T-REX, it was hilarious. Then we got our coach at 4.30 to Rainbow Beach and stayed at Dingos Hostel. It was very quiet in Rainbow Beach and everything was closed by about 10 so we had an early night. The next day we went to the beach but it was far, far too windy so we had to go back and sunbathe by our pool. At 4 we had our safety briefing for our trip to Fraser Island. The man who started the talk was very drunk, but hilarious. The next guy gave us a more serious talk about how we were going to get bitten by snakes and spiders and get mauled to death by dingos and if we survived that then we would definitely crash our 4x4s and die (.... fortunately he was wrong on all accounts!) Then we watched 3 ridiculously BORING videos about the Island and got put into our groups. We were group 3 and with 5 other girls (Claragh, Ellen, Michelle, Viv and Gill).
On Sunday we were up early for Fraser Island, with a free pancake breakfast to get us started. Then we all met
as a group and had to get our car packed up with all our food, drinks and luggage- which was difficult with 8 girls trying to put all their bags in one boot! Then Claragh bravely drove the first leg of the journey to the ferry. While we waited for it to arrive we saw lots of dolphins and then made our way to the island. As soon as we arrived it started to rain but as we were in the car it wasn't too bad and made driving on the sand a bit easier. The first stop was lunch - which was a cheese salad wrap, we were mega excited because cheese and salad are expensive so we hadn't had them in a while! Then we went on to Lake Wabby, we pulled up and Jeff our guide told us we had a 45 minute rainforest walk to get there, which as it was cold and windy we weren't to enthusiastic about. Fortunately once we started walking the rain eased and the walk wasn't too bad. When we got to the lake we weren't sure if we should get in because it was freezing but Jeff had reminded us
'you aren't on holiday you are on an adventure' so in we got!! Then after a slightly chilly walk back we drove to the Shipwreck of Maheno, then I drove us back to camp (driving the 4x4 was so much fun) where it started to rain loads! We were staying in the camp for the evening so we made dinner then had some drinks in our 'street' of tents. We later set up a 'disco' in club Winky's- which was a hut with speakers. By about 11 we were really tired so had an early night!
The next morning was an early start and after breakfast we headed off to our first stop in Champagne pools- Jeff tried to convince us to go in them but it was a little too rainy, cold and early for us so we just paddled in them. The next stop was Indian Head, a cliff which we climbed to see a really nice view. Next up was Eli creek which is the largest freshwater stream on the Eastern Coast of Fraser Island. This time Jeff gave us no choice about going in, we pulled up to the creek and he said right everyone
in their swimwear, no towels or belongings be ready in 5 minutes. We reluctantly got changed as it was really cold and windy outside and ran along the board walk to the start of the creek- with a day trip of elderly people looking on rather shocked by the 30+ crazy people running along in swimwear! Once you were over the shock of getting in it wasn't too bad and we floated along the creek until it got to the sea- feeling brave we went back to the beginning and went round a second time! Then we went back in the cars to warm up and off to Lake Allom, which was full of freshwater turtles and Jeff said to put our feet in as the Aboriginals believed in had healing powers because of an antiseptic that can be found in it. Then we had a story time and Jeff told us all about the History of the island and some of the horrible events that had occurred there- including why Indian head got it's name and other stories told buy the natives of the island. Then after we went back to camp and made dinner and had drinks- it
was a bit of a longer night than the previous and I got to bed about 4.30- which I regretted when Jeff woke us up at 6.45 the next day!
On the Tuesday I was feeling a little worse for wear but we drove up to Lake McKenzie which was amazing- it was a long drive and by the time we got there I was feeling a little perkier! We spent about 2 hours there, sunbathing and enjoying the view. Then on the way back Emily volunteered to drive- which nearly resulted in our death!- it turns out driving off track wasn't her thing and as I was being whipped by branches coming in the window and we got ever closer to the cliff edge we decided to swap drivers (thank God!). After our near death experience I was fully over my hangover and we went to have lunch. I drove the last stretch back to the ferry before we headed back to Rainbow Beach- we were all sad the adventure was over 😞 That evening we all had a group meal and some drinks, me and Emily played the Wii for a bit and then group 3 took
part in a quiz- our team came second out of 6- not bad we thought 😊 Then we had an early night as we had to check out the next day.
