Home for the Heatwave

Finally we landed in Sydney (via Frankfurt, Buenos Aires, Santiago, and Auckland) and it was a HOT HOT HOT!!! 42 degrees the first day we were there - so compared with minus 10 the day we left Prague that's only 52 degrees hotter!!!! Turns out we arrived on day 1 of a heat wave, so the whole time we were home it only dropped below the high 30's one or two days. And for the first time ever we actually enjoyed the jet lag. We woke about 5 or 6am every morning and it gave us time to get some things done (ie check work emails and celebrity-babies.com).

Almost immediately we started off with a long weekend down the coast at Mollymook with Anth's family (including Glen's new 'beyonce' Lil). It was so nice to have real beach time again, not like those rubbish beaches in Europe 😉. And of course it was great weather to be at the beach! But actually it wasn't so hard to deal with the heat in Sydney either since we were mostly staying at Michelle & Scott's air-conditioned house (AC is non-existent in Prague). And when we did venture outside it was mostly to

float in their pool 😊.

That week Jac and James also came up from Horsham, and we got to meet our 'new' niece Mia for the first time and be at her first birthday party. Actually it was a whole week long of festivities as we had a belated Christmases with each family (can I just say Peanut did very, very well for herself!) and then celebrated Australia Day watching the tall ships sail through the heads of Sydney Harbour. Disappointingly Australia Day was the one day that wasn't hot and sunny...just overcast and muggy.

The last chapter of our Jan'09 Aussie Adventure was in Melbourne for Claire and Dane's wedding (Steph went to high school with Claire in Albury). Melbourne was in the grips of an even more severe heat wave than Sydney. Pretty much the whole week was 45 or hotter. The wedding was still beautiful - they said their vows by the bushy banks of the Yarra, and the whole night was a lot of fun. We also took the opportunity of being in Melbourne to go to the Australian Open Tennis semi-final and we saw Roger Federer decimate Andy Roddick. Love Federer 😊

And then it was home time. Back to white, cold Praha. But we'll keep remembering the fun times with family, the heat and all the food that we had been missing...raison toast, doughnuts, milkshakes, meat pies, sausage rolls, wholemeal bread sandwiches with sundried tomatoes... (yes we put on weight, only one of us had an excuse though). It had been 14 months since we were last Down Under, but it will only be another 5 months until we visit again (with a 10 week old Peanut) for Glen and Lil's wedding. 😊
