Woke up to a rainy day (felt like we were back in England), so we decided to go to the powerhouse museum. It was quite cool. There was a working model of the strassburg clock which a lady did a talk on and showed us how it worked. There was also a space station that had an antigravity simulator in too. At night time we went round to heathers house and she cooked lasagne and garlic bread (exactly what we were craving as hostels rarely have ovens), and we had a few drinks with her and her friends.
The next day was much nicer weather so we looked around the markets at the rocks, went to look around sydney opera house (much more impressive close up), went out for a nice lunch, walked along mrs mcqueries point (this is a really nice walk), had a look around botanical gardens (not many flowers compared to the others we have seen but still a very nice park and place to sit and relax), shopping and then out to a bar. A very long and tiring day but well worth it.
The following day we had a nice easy beach day. We
caught the ferry across to manly beach and just literally sunbathed and walked along the beach. After looking around the area and treating ourselves to a coffee and a cake, we caught the ferry back across to circular quay just in time for sunset. Not really an eventful day but it was absolutely perfect.
The day after we went to sydney aquarium. Dave was really happy to finally see some platypus (although not in the wild, but the next best thing). We also saw penguins which were my favourite and they had the typical tunnel with shark and rays swimming over and around you. This is where we spent most of our time. After the aquarium we had lunch looking out on to the harbour and explored the chinese garden which was beautiful.
This next day was probably my favourite day whilst in sydney as we took a tour to the blue mountains. The day didn't kick of great as our tour guide turned up late and he only had three people on his tour, although this actually worked out better as we were upgraded free of charge to a much better tour and a bigger and comfier
couch. We started out our day with a quick stop at scenic world where we got to ride the worlds steepest passenger train down the valley (which had a couple of old mines) before catching the cable car back up to the top. This was really fun as the train track was much steeper than I had expected and the views on the way down were amazing. Me and dave couldn't help but crack up as they started playing the indiana jones theme tune. after a brief drive through some of the beautiful towns and the capitol of the blue mountains, katoomba, we set off to jenolan caves. On arriving you drive through the grand arch which is quite cool. We then went for a walk up to the blue lake before our tour through lucas cave. The cave was so much fun, you had to walk through little passageways and the chambers just kept getting better the further through the cave you got. We saw lots of cave fantasies (formations that look like somethiing) such as jellyfish, a groom running away from his bride and mother-in-law, and the bishop. We saw a cave slide, lots of stalegmites and stalegtites,
and a broken column. We got to see the cave in normal electric lighting (to see the real cave colours) but at the end he showed us how a lot of the other tourist caves are lit in blues and reds. I thought this looked really cool but not as good as its natural colours, dave didn't think much of the multicoloured effect.
waking up to another exceptionally warm day we caught the free shuttle from our hostel to bondi beach. after a relaxing morning of sunbathing we set out on the scenic coastal walk to coogee. We walked past lots of pretty beaches; Tamarama bay (dangerous for swimming as it has a dangerous riptide), nelsons bay, and bronte beach (which are very pretty-although i really liked bronte park a lot more), gordons bay and obviously ending at coogee bay where we had a nice picnic before catching the bus back. when we got back we headed out towards heathers for tea. She made us cottage pie which was really nice and we had a couple of drinks.
Wound down a lot with our last two days in sydney before moving to wollongong. Took advantage of the film
room, had a bbq at the hostel (where we got to try kangaroo burger), shopping and ended our stay with an authentic german dish cooked by some guests staying at the hostel.
Sydney is quite loud and busy (typical city) but the beaches near by and the sun give it a chilled out feeling-back in a week for new years.
