G'day all!!
Happy NEW Year!!! You could safely say that this is the hottest New Year we have ever experienced!! New Years Day reached a scorching 46c and we definately never want to see that again! It was the hottest day on record in Sydney since 1928. Basically it was like when you open an oven and that rush of hot air hits you....except it doesnt go away!! We coped by going to the cinema to see "Chicken Little" and because we couldn't face the heat again...snook into another film! Naughty! Alot of other people seemed to have the same idea as us that day!
Anyway enough of the bad, there is good to Sydney that we havent yet shared with y'al!!
We arrived here around beginning of October..6th or so..I got myself a job straight away and luckily it was a 3 month contract with Colonial First State doing Data Entry so didnt have to worry about finding work from then on. Very lucky! So I started on the first Monday while Darren spent his days looking for a job. He got a job in a similar kind of pisition as what he had at home in
Glendimplex and that was a 2 month job so we were sorted. Got a little studio flat in the first week in Rushcutters Bay which is basically the end of Kings Cross (Red Light district). The bay is lovely and quiet but when you go to Kings Cross it is quite a different story. Crazy people of all kinds and shapes, living under bridges or on the street having full blown conversations and arguments with themselves, prostitutes and trannies..you name it Kings Cross has it. The street is full of Adult shops and strip bars..height of sleeze! But hey...its an experience.
Life is just that really in Sydney. We do the same things here as anywhere else. Work, eat, sleep, go out, laundry etc. Same in any town or city but at least here it is pretty.
I know that we said that we wouldnt do the real irish thing and just go out in the irish pubs but alas we have fallen into that trap. Its just that they are the best craic and ya dont have any annoying ozzies waffling in yer ear! We prefer Dirty Nellies in Paddington and O'Malleys in Kings Cross as they
have great live music and the best atmosphere. We also have been a few times to backpacker bars. The SideBar being our favourite. Darling Harbour is a good spot too and more trendy.
Right so, what have we seen and done?? Well of course we went to see the Opera House. Walked accross the Harbour Bridge. Really great view of the city from there. Took a one hour harbour cruise. Well worth it. Loved that cos we got to see the city at a different angle and lots and lots of kodak moments. We went to Luna Park which is a kind of theme park on the Harbour. Turned into kids for the day. Great fun and we got to see fab views of the harbour, opera House and bridge from the rides! Went to Bondi Beach. Pretty place, a surfers haven but dont see what all the fuss is about. We havent made it to Palm Beach (where home and away is set) yet or Coogee beach but plan to before we go. Need to do some star spotting! Went to Sydney Tower for dinner one night. Its a revolving restaurant on top of the tower. Food was
crap but was well worth it for the views we got to see. Went to a craft market that is held every week down near the Harbour...great place and really nice things. If only it was at home!! Went to the Blue Mountains one weekend a while back. BEAUTIFUL! The scenery is amazing. We done a lot of walking and sightseeing. Went on the steepest train ride in the world. Its a wee train that goes down the face of a mountain at a 52 degree angle. Scary but brilliant. As Darren would say...it was "class"!! We also went for a ride in a sky cable thingy. It had a glass bottom on it which gave us unobstructed views of the mountains and the surrounds.Went to see one or two of the waterfalls...one of which we had passed before we realised it was a waterfall. We reckon there must be a drought on or something!! Then we went to get a closer look at the Three Sisters (a rock formation). Pretty impressive all around.
One thing that we managed to do while we were here was go and see the Foo Fighters in the Sydney Super Dome in the
Olympic Park. BRILLIANT does not describe it...they ROCKED!! We had a ball. Rocked our little hearts out and needless to say Jo Jo had a wee sore neck for a few days afterwards...when will I learn to NOT head bang!!
Christmas! Christmas Christmas Christmas! It was 'different'. Not really Christmas at all but we did have a good day. About 26 of us went for dinner in an Irish pub called PJ O'Brien's. Food was lovely and was great craic too. Couldn't beleive the amount of people that we know that are here...there must be no body in Bailieborough at the minute. Went to Midnight mass on Christmas Eve in the Cathedral....it was lovely. Jam packed though but the Cathedral was so impressive...really something!
And of Course, New Year! We decided to watch the fireworks from our local Park at Rushcutters Bay as it looks out over the Harbour and had a direct view of the Harbour Bridge. Perfect! There was a mini show at 9pm and then the main one at 12!! What can we say but it was excellent. Never saw such amazing fireworks. The atmosphere was great too. Must of been a couple of thousand
there. Far better than having to hang around the city from noon in the scorching heat. Then after the fireworks, we spent the night around Kings Cross. Good times!
We are in our last week in Sydney now. I have only 3 days left of work and Darren is finished. We head to New Zealand on the 10th...cant wait!!
All in all we liked Sydney and had a good time but it is not what it is cracked up to be and we will be glad to be going to cooler climates! Bring on New Zealand...and the rest of our trip!!
