Treated me kind, sweet destiny carried me through desperation" -Mariah
Different surroundings
New beginning
My "mom" is gone and run off to Cuba for three weeks. My "sister" has gone to stay with her father. My "roommates" have moved out and inot their apartment. Most of the other interns are in cresent head trying to surf. What was here yesterday is gone for tomorrow. Weird when I think about it.
This is the week I
took off my training wheels. With no one familiar around I'm officially on my own for a bit. As the week progressed I settled into my new housing arrangement with two new roommates, two new employees at work and an entire country to absorb.
One goal i had was to learn rugby, I see no better time then now. Especially with the largest game of the season approaching which I just happen to have a ticket too!!! =) So on one game night I head down to the local pub and blinklessy tip my head like a dumb dog at the enormous projection screen. Staring at the action long enough gave me a feel of the game and how
its played. But now I had questions. I need to know terms, and scoring and positions and explanations of league vs club and i could go on for hours. Luckily the employees were more then willing to answer all my good and absolutley silly questions. Needless to say I think I know my stuff when it comes to "footy" (thats what they call it) now-a-days. The funny thing is I have no idea if its played similarly in the states...
Next I'm off to the wildlife reserve down in darling harbour. A run through town to make my bus was just the thing i needed to jumpstart what was to be a great day!
Heres some firsts in my life from the days endeavors:
• I coerced a kangaroo to come over and play at which poin I got to pet and feed him a little. They're very cool- Fave of the day!
• I saw my first koala. man are those things lazzzy. I saw about 20 total. 1 of which was yawning, 1 of which was eating and all the rest were passed out cold.
• I saw a squid too. They are very mysterious looking
Just Some Aunties
where are the uncles? creatures. The're movements are hypnotising and their colour is inexplicable. You can find a quick video at the top of the page!
• There was also a butterfly sanctuary where finally after being patient I had one land on me. Actually many landed on me and i must say- it was sweeet.
Did you know that 1/6 of all parrots are native to Australia? and tat Koalas have 2 thumbs? or that Australia kangaroos live up to 20 years in captivity but only 6 in the outback? just some quick pic facts from the day
How ironic to be looking at kangaroos and koalas only to see skyscrapers as the backdrop of their manmade habitats.
I know, I know.. i said I was homesick right??? Well I am! I'm just getting it, I'm totally on my own out here and thousands of miles away from the two places that have always been home- Boston & New Hampshire. I'm thankful to have my moms necklace and best friends ring with me eveywhere I go. And pictures can only do so much. I'm missing parties
Another comfort I can always look to is the sky. It has always
put me at ease with its familialarity, predominantly at night. I can remember leaning over the railing on the backporch of christopher street trying to see the man in the moon. Well there is no man in the moon here but that's quite alrigt because instead there is a rabbit! I kid you not, of course it takes a little imagination but hey- so does seeing the man in the moon right?
It's funny but I miss the warm hugs and kisses of loved ones most. They are familiar and comfortable and i relaize always under-appreciated. I have a friend James who moved to Oz about 4 years ago and never thought i'd see him again, and still can say the same thing as my time here is limited. But i did get to see him. I am grateful for that opportunity of
seeing a familiar face,
sharing a familiar laugh,
hearing a familiar voice (even with the aussie accent) and above all
feeling a TRUE hug.

I'll take you picture and hold it in my mind
Take another and have you all the time
And as I'm leaving the distance magnifies Hats off
innovative & smart Close my eyes and find you inside
Like rain on the windshield
I'm moving through the night
Roaming the time zones
Filmed in black and white
You're here in my headphones
Each and every mile
Falling asleep with the lights on all night
He's not on time, he's always on time
Turning the deadbolt, stars turn into light
Holding his hand she'll finally sleep now
I'm way up downtown
Superstitious
