Kakadu Day #2
... this is from Kakadu, this was a homestead of some aboriginal people and this is where they caught the majority of their food. Food being long necked turtles, crocodiles, snakes... and such. Well... we flew into Sydney yesterday afternoon. Six plane rides down... I don't know how many to go! It's second nature now either way! I'm losing track of what all I've let you guys in on and what I haven't... looks like I just updated you guys on Kakadu National Park.
So since then... we've had a free day, went to see Lucky Miles (a stupid movie) at a Deckchair Cinema (just what it says it is...) where their possums (no 'o') were walking around, which was probably the best part of the movie, and then got up at 4:00 in the morning the following day to depart for Alice Springs. This is the more fun part, I guess you could say. We landed in Alice Springs after about an hour and a half flight (flight number 5) from Darwin. I'm really not sure why we stopped but it was worth it when we were on our way and stopped in a camel farm to ride camels. But while we were in Alice Springs, we went to a museum/art gallery (I think this is museum #5 for me) and then grabbed lunch in the middle of town. On our 6
Mandy
This is Mandy, the homstead owners daughter. She used to actually work in the tourism industry in Kakadu National Park through guiding tours and opening up her home to people like me... while educating them on her lifestyle in hopes that they'll appreciate it more. hour bus ride to Ayers Rock (Uluru), like I said, we stopped to ride camels, pet dingo's, look at kangaroos and emu's and then stopped for dinner as well. There wasn't much to see along the ride, although there were some kangaroos that I saw, both alive and dead on the side of the road (like our deer are).
Once we got to Ayers Rock, we settled into our rooms (jail cells) and kind of just hung out for the night. A lot of people went out to the bar/music area within our little lodge area. The next day was our Mala Walk at the base of Uluru (which I have pictures from) and then we had a conservation presentation on the aboriginal people of Uluru. A lot of that was to do with why they don't want people climbing the rock and what the benefits are of people climbing the rock. It's actually a journal entry for me as an assignment... Then, we got back on the bus and went to the Ayers Rock Resort and had a presentation about their management and what they do to make it work, considering they're out in the middle of no
River
More of the River outside the back of Mandy's Place. I thought it was pretty! where (literally), and other management strategies. (Which is also a journal entry for me...) That night, we saw the sunset at Uluru (more pictures, of course! Like 50... seriously!) and went back to cook our own food, Aussie Style. I had a beef burger (their beef is different here, probably not processed!) and Emu Sausage. You'll see pictures from that as well. Afterwards, we all hung out, had a drink (it was our 4th of July) and sang the National Anthem in a bar full of Australians. Went to bed, woke up the next morning around 5:45am and saw the sunrise at Kata Tjuta (also 50 more pictures), came back, packed up our stuff and drove to the airport. Got on the airplane, got to Sydney three hours later, had our orientation and went to dinner at a Thai place right up the road. By the looks of what's close, it looks like I'm going to be eating one of two things for dinner (breakfast and lunch are provided) the entire three weeks I'm here... either Pizza or Asian Foods.
So while we've been in Sydney, we've been told to stay out of a couple pubs... because there is
Trail
Walking on a trail to learn about more rock art... our guide was Johnny, who also lived on the homestead that Mandy did. Mandy's mother is Johnny's wife. a gang presence there. We've been told never to accept a drink from an Australian guy (common sense) because it's not a friendly gesture, it's an invitation. We've been told that the bus rides are EXPENSIVE! $26.00/10 rides. I guess it's not that bad, but ... I'm SORT OF ON A BUDGET! Ha ha. The gym is $22.00 for 10 visits at the pool, $77.00 for 10 visits to the actual gym... (again, kind of expensive!) What else? My room is another jail cell (I'll upload pictures) but it's become a little more homey since I unloaded my bag and unpacked all my stuff.
Okay... I'm uploading pictures now. Mom -- I'll be on Yahoo some of the day (iChat too) because we have NOTHING to do! I seem to be the only person who gets the wireless hotspot in my room as well (lucky me!) so I will probably have quite a few people in here later, checking their email... because we can't get it set up through the school until tomorrow afternoon.
Okay, now I'm really uploading pictures!
