I can’t remember what it feels like to be able to sleep past 5am! Admittedly, we do leave the blackout blind up so just have a thin privacy blind which allows us to see out, but the office workers over the road can’t see in (at least I hope they can’t!). This means by 5am it’s practically daylight in the room, so once you wake up, it’s hard to get back to sleep.
We were on the first bus to get to the connecting stop for the Bondi loop this morning, bit of a wait for it to arrive, but a lovely trip around the suburbs, away from the main city. Some of the houses over that way were impressive, with incredible views of the Sydney skyline. Wouldn’t mind living in one of those and enjoying the New Year fireworks from the comfort of a balcony or roof terrace!
Bondi beach looked lovely, but it was absolutely heaving with people, I guess it’s the place to be on a Saturday. We decided to stay on the bus and complete the tour as there were still some places we wanted to see in the city and we didn’t want to
have to wait 2 hours for the next bus! We also saw our first Cockatoo today, in the tree above one of the bus stops.
We completed the Bondi loop and arrived back at the first stop, by Hyde Park. It’s amazing how peaceful the park is when it’s right in the centre of the city. It was a lovely stroll through and we stopped off at the Anzac memorial which Roy had wanted to see, an amazing building with a small museum underneath.
After the park, we headed to the Sydney Tower Eye, where we shot up 250 metres in a tiny triangular lift to the observation deck. With the nice clear, sunny weather today – we had amazing views of the city and could understand why our feet were starting to ache when we saw all the different routes we’d taken over the past few days!
After returning down to ground level, we decided to walk over to Darling Harbour to get a bite to eat and what seems to be becoming a regular habit of a lunchtime beer. The hop on/hop off bus is a bit of a nightmare to be honest, they’re so
few and far between it would take longer to wait for the bus than to just walk it – so that’s what we did.
Just to get some value for money on our 2 day bus tickets, we did get on the bus for one stop after lunch to go 1 mile up the road and then take a stroll round Barangaroo Reserve, which was very pleasant. But then had to walk back as the buses had finished for the day!
Our final night here was spent at Sydney’s oldest pub, Fortune of War. It’s cooler in the evenings, around 20 degrees, but still very comfortable to sit outside and listen to the live music.
And that brings us to the end of our time in Sydney, we’ve packed quite a lot into our few days here and racked up almost 40,000 steps. We've enjoyed our time in the city but won't miss the constant blaring of horns (they do like a toot!)
We’ll be heading to the airport tomorrow morning for our flight to Christchurch, New Zealand where we lose another 2 hours (on the plus side, it may mean we start waking up a
little later!)
